At least Raw in 1997 was leaps and bounds better than Nitro. Raw had Austin, Hart Foundation, coked out Shawn, Taker, Mankind, and Sid. Nitro had the nWo cut the same boring reign of terror HHH tier promo each week.

I really enjoyed the USA homecoming episode, it has Angle vs Michaels in an Iron Man match that was pure kino.

I watched that live and was a little AOL smark. There were a ton of rumors about a surprise debut of the Nasty Boys and a few others.

It's something from 97/98 Raw but NOT the Kane episode that always gets brought up. Definitely something that's heavy on promos by Foley, heel Shawn and Austin, probably something from between Summerslam 1997 and Survivor Series 1997.

Just the first episode after Summerslam has a long opening promo by Harts interrupted by Austin and then the promo where Shawn turns heel, Undertaker interrupts and Kane is brought up first time. I think I'm going to go through the recaps and see if there's a specifically good-seeming episode.

This sounds like a good contender.

tbh I'm a bit surprised how there was basically no episodes where two promos I really remember liking were in the same episode.

The standout is maybe the after Rumble 1998 that starts with a DX promo with Austin that's cut off with Kane since the main event is supposed to be Kane/Austin. In the middle of the show they have Tyson/Shawn promo that ends with Tyson joining DX and then the show ends with Austin/Kane where Shawn superkicks Austin and it turns into a long Kane/Taker thing.

There's also the 97 episode that starts with a really good Shawn promo where he hypes up his insurance policy before main event against Mankind, Rock comes back and joins Nation, Dude Love and Shawn have a promo and the main event is a surprisingly good match before ending with the debuting Rick Rude.

There's really a need for 30 minute cuts of 97/98 Raw with only the main event stuff because that's the only relevant part anyway. Also technically two of some of the best promos I remembered (Austin on his ranch and Shawn with a broken steel chair in his hand) were technically Friday Night Main Events but I think those aired instead of Raw and are basically Raws because I remember seeing them.

Had it not ended with the Katie Vick bullshit the RAW roulette episode with Kane winning a tlc match solo would easily be the best of the ruthless aggression era. Was one of the only times during Hunter’s reign of terror that Raw felt exciting and unpredictable.

    Raw Roulette

There are two that stick out to me.

The Raw after Judgement Day 1998. Vince fired Austin the night before and Austin comes to the arena armed. Throughout the night Vince loses all his protection as he insults a local police officer, the cowardly Stooges abandon him, and he kicks Mankind out of his office for being a goof, and then Austin captures him as he tries to flee the arena leading to the famous Bang 3:16 in-ring where Vince pisses his pants and Austin gives him his new contract.

The Raw after Backlash 1999. Undertaker kidnapped Stephanie the night before and begins the show by phoning Vince and demanding documents signing over the WWF to him, handed over by Steve Austin by the top of the hour. Vince can’t get Austin to help him, it was a ruse anyway, and Taker tries to marry Stephanie anyway before raping her. Austin makes the save after Shane McMahon, who has a B plot with Rock on the show, stops the Corporation from rescuing Stephanie.

Many episodes of Raw have good segments and angles here and there but Russo and Ferrara are the only people who really wrote “episodes” of Raw like any other television show, where there is a discernible A plot and multiple B plots that have multiple exciting beats throughout the show that keep you watching. After they left it just became a parade of skits and repeated bits with better matches - and occasionally a good main event that is “built” through the night with barely connected skits in which nothing is really advanced, and the wheels are just made to spin in advance of the match happening.

The show where Mankind wins the belt is another great one, with beats throughout the night of Mick securing the match and DX getting involved to protecting him from the Corporation, misdirects over Austin being in the arena, and the epic Mark Henry and Chyna blow off with the troony.
