What makes reading "better" than watching netflix or some youtube video?

At the end of the day reading a novel is the same as watching a movie on netflix. You consume its content and maybe it has a story or characters you can think about.
So what makes reading books superior to all other forms of mindless media consumption?

There are only films from the 20th and 21st century. Thus films have an unavoidably modern perspective. Literature has a much broader base of people to learn about.

Also, film is inherently more restrictive as a medium. Books can easily communicate thoughts during action, in films this very hard.

Also film is constrained by capitalism. An author can write a 2000-page novel on whatever they want, making a 4 hour movie with any amount of production value is impossible. Return on investment stifles creativity.

Film is more restrictive intellectually but less restrictive viscerally and sensuously. They accomplish very different things. You would be hard pressed to find filmmakers whose primary task is conveying profound ideas. Eisenstein wrote extensively about it but his method of filmmaking was never truly popular.

books feel more real because you make the movie in your mind. Also Gravity's Rainbow mogs all movies

      >meme book
GR is not a good example to demonstrate here. Some films can be better than novels focused on literature, they can capture creativity in the frames alone using cinematography, and incorporate good writing in the screenplay. Filmmakers often infuse their own techniques into the films, which otherwise, deviates from the novel and author's style, but it creates a unique scenario where the film can be aesthetically appeasing from an artistic perspective.
The reason while majority of films are lowbrow garbage is as this anon stated

    because it isn't mindless.
you have to properly work out what you are reading, which both makes you use your imagination and either helps keep in shape or improve your vocabulary.
also it can be way longer, and define things movies can't.
a book can make you imagine something, while a movie can only show itself.

mind you, this doesn't mean they're inherently better. stuff like action is better seen on a big screen with a thrilling soundtrack, for example.
they're different ways of telling stories.
nonetheless, books ask more of you, and give more out.

Pausing a film or having to stop it and come back to it later spoils it in a way that doesn't happen with a book. A good films last a couple hours tops. A good books can last weeks, even months.

There is only one real way in which books are superior, and that's the fact that they have been around as a medium for so much longer than the screen that at this point there are more literary masterworks than there are for TV, film, etc. But beyond that you're right.

Films suck and are for stupid people LOL. A film can't stand on its own, they literally use music to set the tone. Imagine if you opened a book and it played songs during different chapters LMAO nope all you get is words you homosexual. A functioning moron could go to a movie and get something out of it, when they would open a book and not be able to read a single sentence.

      >a film can’t stand on its own
The music is part of the film, moron. It’s an audio-visual medium

Film is the language of racemixing and child pornography.
I would rather read the worst novels than watch the best films.

Reading a book as a whole is superior not just to other mediums but other forms of writing, the reason for this is very simple: it provides a framework for additional knowledge.

You read a book on the history of film, the next time you learn about some film you can slide it right into that framework in the right place

You've mistakenly come to this board with the belief that it is a reading as a hobby board, which it most certainly is not.
