There is no "Linux" file picker, there are dozens of file pickers. You just don't like the one you have, or possibly don't know how to change whatever it is that's bothering you
Simply answer: use a distro that has KDE or gnome 44 as the DE. You're using probably a distro that has an outdated gnome version. Try something like kubuntu if you're on ubuntu and you insist on using ubuntu no matter what. I don't know what you're using though.
It seems you don't know basic things about linux, look up a video about desktop enviroments and what they are. If you are on mint you are not gonna be able to install gnome on your own yet, I suggest moving to popOS instead of Mint, which comes with gnome by default.
It took me a gazillion years to learn how to install mint, I am not switching distros
I guess I give up and will just have to transfer my anime porn to my phone so I can send it to my boyfriend easier
Or you can just drag the image into your file picker from your file manager. Or you can copy everything you want to transfer into a folder even if it temporarily to copy them all at once if you need that.
>Or you can just drag the image into your file picker from your file manager.
I will repeat it again, this does not work on discord-screenaudio, it does work on firefox but not discord-screenaudio, why? I don't fucking know!!!

Well if you've been using mint all this time you probably already understand the basics of ubuntu. If you still want to try linux at some point kubuntu may be worth trying for you.

It's probably because it's a flatpak and doesn't have the permission

Flatseal should be a mandatory install whenever you install Flatpak since Flatpak is pretty much useless without it.
>It took me a gazillion years to learn how to install mint
anon, i think you might be better off using wind... what am I saying? if you cant follow a simple gui installer the best and only option you have left is a mac
If he's on Ubuntu he can just update 5o 23.04 because that includes the thumbnails in file picker.
However you need to open the file browser to generate the thumbnails first (annoying)
Write dynamic library that implements your own file picker using the GTK interface and then LD_PRELOAD it. Yeah it's fucking dumb that file picker wasn't designed as its own process. Other way is to implement some DBUS bullshit and setting some environment variables so XDG-PORTAL aware apps call your dbus bullshit instead. Someday I rip out the filepicker from blender and make it standalone filepicker so we can finally be saved from the linux filepicker tyranny.
can't do that on discord-screenaudio (the only way to fucking screenshare with audio on discord on linux btw, though this is more of a discord being gigahomosexuals problem and not a linux problem)
I just use Discord in browser and it works flawlessly
Also, if you're on a chromium-based browser, make a shortcut/script that runs the following line:
browser-name --app="https://discord.com/channels/@me"
This lets you open the Discord tab in an exclusive window without ULR bar, bookmarks and so on, pretty much 1:1 Discord experience minus background notifications I guess, also you save up 300MB or so of space due not having an extra copy of chromium installed just for Discord
>the only way to fucking screenshare with audio on discord on linux
actually there is another way, but you need Pipewire (which you should have - it's better than pulse)
install this, qpwgraph (Flatpak):
https://flathub.org/apps/org.rncbc.qpwgraph
From Reddit:
>Now, just drag the output_FL and output_FR from your application to input_FL and input_FR in WEBRTC VoiceEngine
Of course, this is with pw-jack and catia, you can use those too, but I just felt like qpwgraph would be a bit simpler as it only involves hitting install on Flathub to set up (assuming you have pipewire). I personally find the native Discord app much smoother and less buggy than Discord-screenaudio, but it is a tradeoff that you have to select what app you want to share sound from
I'm trying to use gnome, I managed to change the file manager but not the file picker, how the fuck do I change the file picker? aaaaahh why is linux so over complicated
It seems you don't know basic things about linux, look up a video about desktop enviroments and what they are. If you are on mint you are not gonna be able to install gnome on your own yet, I suggest moving to popOS instead of Mint, which comes with gnome by default.
>Linux file picker
GTK/Gnome is not "Linux", on top of that there many different GTK file managers. You're complaining about Gnome devs being incompetent and refused (until recently) to fix a 17 year old issue, not "Linux". A temporary solution is to use your file manager copy the file then paste it into the file picker.
>aaaaahh why is linux so over complicated
How do you change the file picker on Windows or Mac?

Thinly veiled troll thread.
What do you mean complicated? on windows you can't even change it. He gave you the easy solution to install kde. Otherwise you have to install xdg desktop portal kde.
I always like how the little thumbnail window on the side changes size with the filename of whatever you're looking at.
So you can't even scroll the list and watch the images fly by, because it moves all over the place.
Ever try to ctrl-f search for something in that fucking thing? Press three keys and you can go into the next room to grab a coffee or something and come back just in time for it to stop sorting.
It's like they went out of their way to make it as horrible as it could be.
>2014 on Gnome
is that really GTK? what are you using to get that? ive never really had a problem with not seeing thumbnails but itd be nice to have them, been on Ubuntu for a year after ditching Windows
There are 0 repercussions for writing low quality software for linux. People are absolutely no standards and even paid linux developers are treated as hobbyists. It's clear projects like GNOME have no actual top down pressure which means people just jack off.
yet it works for me, ever ask yourself why is that? it's something you're doing but you don't know what. maybe you should learn a bit more about linux before blaming it, btw linux is a kernel, hope this helps.
idk i couldn't get it working as intended. instead i made a script that invokes the xdg-desktop-portal-termfilechooser script with the -r option. the script i wrote then checks if termfilechooser crashes, and if it does, relaunches it.
it's intended to be a systemd service but that wasn't reliable for me, although it was working perfectly in a previous hyprland install i did.
if you look in the issues tab, you'll see directions for installing.
basically you just need to make sure you only have xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-termfilechooser installed.
>Use older GTK file picker >Have to check previews and thumbnails for ants to find some shit sometimes >Use newer file picker on GNOME 44 >Have to generate thumbnails first >Use KDE file picker >Wait, wait until the files load, wait, wait a bit more, wait some more, ok, now you can pick something or save a file >None of them have a proper search function

Just drag and drop it from your file manager
can't do that on discord-screenaudio (the only way to fucking screenshare with audio on discord on linux btw, though this is more of a discord being gigahomosexuals problem and not a linux problem)
also that's a hassle even on LULZ
I just use Discord in browser and it works flawlessly

I am running linux mint, using firefox
I have to use Discord-screenaudio to screenshare stuff, it is an absolute need and I can not change it for the browser
https://github.com/maltejur/discord-screenaudio#drag-and-drop-doesnt-work-in-the-flatpak
try reading next time bro
I'm surprised, this actually did end up fixing it, thank you
Flatpak claims another victim...

lmaoing
listen nagger I looked up KDE on the software store or whatever the fuck its called and there were 20000x billion shit named kde

If you are using firefox then that's firefox's fault, change this in about:config
widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.file-picker=1
It was set to 2, I changed it to 1 and nothing happened

Why would he need to change it on windows
use kde
kill yourself
works on windows
Look at all that bloat do a better job of organizing your desktop

Op plz kys you bait child-brained retard holy fucking shit go back to windows or mac. You have no wisdom.
Autism is a bad thing, you should get it treated
linux is trash
>looking for a image
Skill issue - you should be using gthumb.
Skill issue.
But really go swap over to KDE, webm related is beyond your ability and this was in 2014 on Gnome.

No such thing. What program are you ACTUALLY talking about?
in english, four eyes
Read it again, ESL.

he's talking about the gtk shit
Suffer, nagger.
Linux is a kernel. It doesn't have a file picker.

ftfy
Software patents
Each program should implement their own file picker-

install xdg-desktop-portal-termfilechooser and use lf or ranger as your file picker, pussy.
hmm this looks interesting.. i thought portal was only for flatpacks can you explain how to use it?

when did the kernel get a file picker
It didn't, which is what people are upset about.

i'm unironically considering switching from xfce to plasma because of this thumbnail shit
i hate guhnome like you wouldn't believe
