Basically just bands like Isis and Neurosis. Like a more distorted and heavy take on drawn out songs with building climaxes. Lots of crescendos and if there are vocals they’re growled.
Post- music is music that takes the conventions of a genre and uses them in a non-standard way. Real post-metal only really exists in the sub-genre of death metal, through those brutal dm bands that are so chaotic that it turns into waves of sounds more so than distinct notes and rhythms, kind of like post-bop basically.
Fake post-metal is what's usually called post-metal, bands like russian circles or isis. It's not real post-metal because long buildups were in metal prior to it, and it uses a lot of techniques lifted from post-rock music. A more apt title for that music would be "post-rock but slightly heavier"
Post-metal in the 1990s used to refer to what's now called "avant-garde metal" and metal that was extremely progressive/experimental.
Post-metal got redefined as metal bands that take inspiration from the 3rd Wave of Post Rock in the 2000s and a lot of former post-metal got relabeled to avant-garde metal.

Idk bud, most post metal has old school nu-metal sound. Post-metal is just separation from what's popular in the community.

It's when a genre dies and gets kept on life support by becoming weird and experimental.
There was a time before metal, then a time a metal and a time post-metal
post-rock for people who want to feel like they're listening to 'metal'.
it usually fails at being good at either
Crescendocore with growls
Usually refers to atmospheric sludge metal inspired by Neurosis
Then it devolved into heavy crescendo core
