What exactly *is* mass?
>It's the amount of stuff bro
I don't get it. What "stuff?" Is the word "essence" a better description of mass?

    quantitative measure of inertia

How many languages did you learn before english? Mass linguisitually speaking is a unit of measure and therefor plural. We could rename it into essence but it would have to be called 'determined essence' or 'essential weight'.

      >quantitative measure of inertia
nah inertia is a dynamic factor, mass is a quantitative measure of gravitational field displacement.

      So is inertia a "thing?"

None, the word "stuff" always seemed like a dumb way to describe it.
      >We could rename it into essence but it would have to be called 'determined essence' or 'essential weight'.
To me, essence makes a lot more sense when describing mass, like it's an imbued property of matter.

thats the opposite of what mass is though, its not imbued, its inherent.

If light is a particle it has mass. Obviously it's an aether wave though so you're right.

          >If light is a particle
          yes

          no

Yes it's an aether wave so it has no mass.

Light exists so it obviously can't be a wave in the aether since the aether doesn't exist.

            >Yes it's an aether wave
            no

Light is a wave. Aether is the name for the field which propagates it. Call it spacetime or the Anon Field or whatever you want, it still exists.

Mass only happens when energy is confined. Photons are unconfined energy.

No. The existing words work fine. Frick off.

      >Frick off
      No

We have no fricking clue and it seems intuitive enough to just call it the "quantity of matter" or something along those lines.
It also turns out to be directly proportional to the inertia of a body, so you can see it in that light if you want.
You're probably better off not worrying too much about such questions unless you're enrolled in a philosophy course or some other dumb shit.

Property of stuff which causes it to resist movement. The more mass, the more force you need to accelerate it.

you just described the behavior of that property, but what IS the property

      >what is a human
      >a human is a thing that likes to go to the beach and collect stamps
literally gets us no further in figuring out what it is at a fundamental level

Mass = a property of stuff
        A property = a behavior

This is like saying wind is the stuff that blows things around, when in actuality it's composed of air particles that move due to a difference in temperature

Mass is not made from anything. It is a property of something that is made out of something, but the property in and of itself is not made from anything. It just means that the object resists movement.

It's emergent from the collective interactions of the energy contained within.

The same way as something like velocity exists. Velocity is not made from anything. A car can have velocity, but velocity is not made out of cars. It's a property of car.

a quality, more specifically the quality of resisting change in momentum
ultimately what we refer to as objects with mass are standing waves of extremely high-frequency light (far beyond gamma rays), but contemporary physics is yet to catch up
