Interesting. Have Western conservatives always looked at Russia this way? It wouldn't be surprising if so. Russia never became fully liberal in the way the West did. They've always been divided between Western liberalism and Eastern despotism.

It sure confused everyone when they had a successful revolution.
Too bad the chuds overthrew it

      >Have Western conservatives always looked at Russia this way?
Doubtful. Historically, Russia was always a tiny blob compared to the great powers of England, Germany and France.

Uh, Russia was a great power -- unquestionably up there with England, Germany and France.

No, not even close to be in the same rank. These three nations, namely England, Germany and France, are the backbone behind Western civilization, for they disproportionately account for most inventions and achievements of humanity. For most of its history, Russia was just feeding off scraps from their table.

Not really important to mention in this conversation, even if true. You still haven’t addressed why Burke wrote such a thing. Just stop posting.

            I did:

Conservacope. This cope in particular stemmed from the fact that the Empress was German and Burke trusted a German to give the identity-less post-Mongol horde some great identity and turn it thusly into an empire of super humans

It was obviously an idea flawed from the start. You can't root the stupid out of Eurasia (Russia). The land is as if cursed by Satan (the forces of Chaos)

Russia is part of Western civilization but is also outside of Western civilization to an extent.

Aside from that point, there is no question that Russia was always a threat to the other great European powers, which is why, for instance, England and France sided with the Ottomans during the Crimean War.

Russia had a long record of victories over the Ottoman Empire, while the Ottoman Empire threatened Eastern Europe.

So, we can say that Russia always had a great military and won great victories. It was always Western power allying within one another to stop Russia, even though Russia stopped Ottoman encroachment into Europe.

Russians are more artistic than the English -- Russian literature is unquestionably better the English literature. And England produced very few great composers. Russia, on the other hand, are known for their great composers -- especially their pianists.

The French and Germans are more artistic than the Russians, though. I'll give you that.

And moreover, the Soviet Union was the first country to put a man into space. The Russians were always known for their scientific achievements.

Russians discovered many elements on the periodic table.

They changed world history and had an extensive empire for much of the last 400 years, from the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union. You may think of the Russian Revolution as a historical mistake -- it was -- but it was extremely important, influential and changed the world, just like the French Revolution.

I was reading even about Russia exploration of the Arctic, among other things.

Unquestionably a great, world-changing power -- in terms of influence, ambition, science, military, politics.
