The keyword is "intelligent", the speed chimes you think of only started chiming when they hit a certain speed limit, but the tech that the thread is about has to know the area speed limit so it uses the cameras on the outside of the car to recognize speed limit signs.
Cars that have this have already existed for some time, but until now it's been optional, mostly because of how utterly unreliable it is. I don't think there has been a single car where the system hasn't made several errors per drive.

I dunno what your experience is but my 2022 Corolla identifies speed limit signs extremely well and reliably and rarely misses one. The only time it gets slightly weird is when in school zones, it picks up the school limit as the actual limit.

Subaru had a primitive version of this since the 2016 eyesight model cars, that is pretty accurate, and annoying as hell. It makes "pong" sound every time there is a speed change and flashes a red speed limit sign on the display.

Works pretty well in my experience in cars I have been in that have this feature.

its gonna be like 80s japanese car chimes

my current car still has its chimer, go faster than 106 and it dings constantly, loudly. It's a good deterrent for speeding IMO at least on motorways

      fatalities on the rise
      Hasn't changed in 30 years.
Population has increased by 30% but pedestrians fatalities totals have not risen so its actually decreased per capita.

        Anonymous

Not only did it increase per capita, the real statistic is in the fatalities per unit of distance walked.
30 years ago people used to actually walk places and kids played in the streets. Now, unless you have a death wish, you WILL scrape up 2k for a shitbox to spare yourself the trek across the arterial to get your groceries and you WILL chauffer your kids to wherever they need to go.
        Thank boomers.

Your optimism is either from lack of experience or stupidity.

Qualcomm phone chips have not been crackable in several years, the only examples are when someone leaks engineer builds or engie dev tools.
Nvidia GPUs have been impossible to reprogram until someone leaked ( then outdated) NVFlash versions, such as recently for the RTX 2000s series.

If they want/need/require to lock out an ECU it can and will be done.

I'm the one who brought up ECU lockdowns and you can bet your ass any hard speed limiter that uses GPS/camera detection is going to be a system tied into the main computer for compliance.

              It's going to happen.
              Stop pretending and be prepared.

it sounds like what youre saying is: its only a matter of time before some chosen hero will leak an engineering build of any particular ECU's firmware 😉
and as long as there are mandated OBD2 ports on cars, it will be trivial to make use of said leaked firmware
i appreciate your concerns, but the good guys always win ok

              >and as long as there are mandated OBD2 ports on cars
Even if they were not mandated. Car manufacturers need dealerships to hook into the car's computer for standard maintenance to even firmware updates. If the pandora's box is leaked on how all that works years worth of car's ECUs will be available to re-program. I'm surprised we don't see drop in ECUs for cars with shit locked down harder than epstein's black book

Thats not a speeding problem, its a drug problem. Just like the homeless problem isn't lack of homes, its a drug problem. If the government made a home $20, an addict would sell it to get high for a day. Sure, let the government install red light assist, lane assist, and speed assist. All they will help you with is being a more stationary target for crackheads blasting through red lights in $500 cars lol. Drug users are a disease on society.
