AOC was one missed paycheck away from sucking cock for rent before the Democrats decided to field here as a token minority candidate. Do you really think she has the first fucking clue how an economy functions on even the most rudimentary level?

        Anonymous

Of course she doesn't have a clue!

When she rallied to stop Amazon from setting up shop in her district, she said something like this:

"The tax cuts we were going to give Amazon is now money that will be passed onto our citizens and the people who need it most."

She doesn't even understand what a tax cut is.

I agree 100% – AOC was absolutely cherry-picked as a token diversity hire. They didn't have any smart white guys who they thought would win over the youth, so the Dems decided to look around and they found a ditzy cocktail waitress/bartender to become a new face in the Democrat party. It's disgusting. She's disgusting. The whole thing is so wrong it isn't even funny. The only consolation is that she's losing popularity every time she opens her mouth because it's obvious she doesn't know how to do her job. She hasn't done a single thing to truly help her district.

The interests of all student debts should be paid off (accounting for what has already been paid), leaving the contractors to pay back the same amount they had been loaned.
And then taking interests made illegal on all national citizens but not foreign.

Over 95% of student debt is held by the US government. What you're suggesting is taxing the public so women can have a four to ten year party. You're not hurting the banking garden gnomes with this, they were run out of student loans decades ago, you're hurting the general public.

The US government took over student loans and owns 92% of the debt. You take out a loan. The school gets paid. You pay back the government with interest. Forgiving student loan debt alone will just prolong the same cycle. There is no impetus for schools to lower prices. If anything, it is an encouragement to keep raising them.

There are two conflicting issues I have with student debt:

Firstly – When you decide to forgive loans, what do you tell the guy who just paid off his $200,000 loan to become a doctor by working a second job? Or the single mom who finally paid off her $80,000 loan for a bachelor's degree at a local college while working and taking care of a baby?
Where do you draw the line? How far back can you forgive? What about people who've filed for bankruptcy at 25 or 30 because they couldn't pay their student debt?

        Secondly:
I do believe that colleges and universities (especially the big fancy private ones) are charging far, far too much money for their services. Furthermore, there's an entire business devoted to trapping young adults in student debt—young adults who have very little understanding of the concept of money lending, nor any real appreciation for just how much, say, $100,000 is really worth. Therefore, these firms and programs which get kids to take out huge loans at age 18-20 need to be exposed. They need to stop shilling at high schools.

So...stop the problem before it starts, and don't forgive student debt unless you're gonna start writing checks for students who've paid theirs off going back at least 10 years.

the justification for my support for student loan forgiveness is based on the lose money for wallstreet that has already caused 8.6% cpi and cannot stop. if youre argument is adding 1.5 trillion to the government 100 trillion plus unfunded liabilities or 30 trillion plus debt will cause a financial collapse you should have a nice day.

I was not advocating for debt forgiveness; just giving examples.

            >usually proportional to their country's economic clout
            >GDP

I understand that rethinking national debt as a debt to income ratio (debt to GDP) rather than a nominal figure is one way to approach the future; that being said, deficits shouldn't be normalized.

            >deficits shouldn't be normalized.
Absolutely not. I agree 100%. Unfortunately, they are being normalized. Biden recently bragged about getting our deficit down by a few billion dollars, but it's still in the trillions—just a tiny slice of what it was during the pandemic and when spending went off the rails. Sadly, I think that the pandemic set a new precedent for what's "acceptable" (for Presidents and big politicians with great power). Obviously, this is a very bad thing. The way in which gov't spends money is absolutely reprehensible. If any normal person spent like that, they'd be broke in a matter of minutes.

If you don't want debt, don't get into it voluntarily. If you do, expect to honor the contract. The only way to make student loan forgiveness even close to "fair" would be to let the universities shoulder the costs and pay back the money. Unfortunately, they spend so much money on random useless shit that it'd totally bankrupt all but the wealthiest of them.

Canadian Medicare provides coverage for approximately 70 percent of Canadians' healthcare needs, and the remaining 30 percent is paid for through the private sector.[7][8] The 30 percent typically relates to services not covered or only partially covered by Medicare, such as prescription drugs, eye care, and dentistry.[7][8] Approximately 65 to 75 percent of Canadians have some form of supplementary health insurance related to the aforementioned reasons; many receive it through their employers or use secondary social service programs related to extended coverage for families receiving social assistance or vulnerable demographics, such as seniors, minors, and those with disabilities.[9]

This. any tax havens they flee to we can either go to war with them or place bounties on them individually. There's no country that's not facing a huge recession/depression at this point. So they'd likely just keep a low profile, but their businesses can be taxed in place of them assuming they still siphon profits off of them. These billionares aren't interested in "building infrastructure" or "creating jobs" which is the only value they hold in society. How many billionaires we're vocal about lockdowns and mandatory vaccines? Fuckem

This is exactly why there are so many rich people in Florida, because there's no income tax. You can make $100 million per year and you don't have to pay a cent—just property taxes and sales tax, which are nothing if you're rich.

Taxing the rich never works, you're right, because they ALWAYS find a way to play the system and get out of paying. It's a fool's errand.

At this point the numbers don't even seem real to the people with the power to change them. They're just playing around with vast amounts of debt; not money.

The average person simply cannot fathom what a trillion dollars is actually worth (and I'm not saying I can either), and so it doesn't seem real to them either. The good news is that many countries in the Western World also have massive amounts of debt (usually proportional to their country's economic clout), so at least we're not the only ones drowning in fake money while printing more of it, while inflation skyrockets.

I saw on the news this morning that to buy a home in Boston costs an average of $700,000 and that the max you can spend on your mortgage is 31% of your income. Do the math on that one. Millennials are fucked; we can't afford to live, and Zoomers? Forget it.

I understand that rethinking national debt as a debt to income ratio (debt to GDP) rather than a nominal figure is one way to approach the future; that being said, deficits shouldn't be normalized.

How is a bank allowed to do this shit but then the government forces you to pay it back. There are little degrees that are actually pointless, and besides, I don't advocate open borders for 3rd worlders to come charging in. You can only have a welfare state if you have strict border control. The middle class is dying if not dead, and the way to restore it is by doing what other western countries did, ie subsidise higher education.

There is a reason why I have to get a foreigner for each task, which require competence. So nop, no benefits of running it at all. Just a little story, employed a woman with 25 years of exp. She worked for 9 months, when suddenly decided she is not going to come to work anymore. Her salary was way above avarage for the US market. I don’t think a one-time debt forgiveness will solve a fucking thing if no changes are made in how the loans are issued. At that point you’ve established a precedent and every few years, politicians will run on more student debt forgiveness and people will blow their wad in tuition with the expectation that their debt will eventually be forgiven. That isn’t healthy. A good first step for everyone would to stop issuing the federally-guaranteed student loans that have allowed schools to jack their tuition prices up to obscene levels. You should be allowed to declare bankruptcy for these loans (I’m thinking long term if these loans continue to be issued).

We can have a discussion about that, because I agree that one time cancellation is not a long term solution, but my solution is free college, since I think that the vast majority of degrees that people take up are very useful to society and bludgeoning young people with debt is part of what kills the middle class. If you remove the profit motive you get rid of the price gouging that you talk about, and the individual university can get subsidised based on how many students graduate and with how good grades they get, which avoids the issue of unis pumping students out with poor standards. This is the system we use in Denmark, since it encourages a meritocracy for the universities

my favorite part about these plans is they do nothing about addressing the trillions already gifted daily to investors and wallstreet. crabs in a bucket so perfect almost flawless like some diamond.

Do any of these plans deal with what to do moving forward or are we to just do a debt amnesty every 10 years?
What of the people who paid off their college costs as the bills came in? I went out of state, it cost $25k/yr and between my two blue collar parents and myself working internships and working throughout the year we paid it off without loans. Do we get that money back?

Debt amnesty is just a bandaid and worse a moral hazard. If people know their debt is going to be forgiven the next generation of students will be debtmaxxing and crying again in another few years. It would also cause the price of college to go up not down.

Any debt amnesty without fixing the real problem EXPENSIVE AS FUCK UNIVERSITIES WHO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHENEVER THEY FEEL LIKE IT it's just a waste of time and would in fact make it worse. Nobody asks why books are $500/semester when it's info that has been around for decades. They could easily put all books in PDF format and offer them online. WHY THE FUCK are the administrative departments so big and fucking needed in the first place? How can community colleges teach you virtually all electives for a fraction of the price?

Limit the amount they can charge to some metric based off of household income. Or make the universities liable for the debt. If their students can't pay the debt back and the student must default then it is the University who loses the money. Maybe they might start teaching things that are actually worthwhile and dropping the bullshit.

I agree, tax the rich and send that money to third world nations, both black and white liberals are overburdened with wealth in comparison.
America must forgive foreign debt FIRST, that includes the money the UK has been paying for 50 odd years to pay back for WWII loans. Britain WON THE WAR and we want our money back, not treated like losers.

That’s not a reality. Soft money theory is how progressives plan to spend 5 trillion in social services by just printing the money they need. Since they erroneously believe the US can’t go bankrupt and inflation wouldn’t exist.

The US does that too. Most nations do that by lowering your combined tax rate for being married and having kids.

In fact the child tax credit that republicans forced to expire, drastically cut the number of children in poverty in half. When they should have added a rider to only allow it to apply to married couples.

The debt holders would be out a trillion dollars. Look who holds the debt.

The US government holds the most.

          >the CEOs of some of the companies at the center of this crisis will be called to testify before the Senate regarding our broken student loan system and the role they and their firms have played in perpetuating borrower harm. The two student loan executives scheduled to attend the hearing—Navient CEO Jack Remondi and PHEAA CEO Jim Steely—oversee companies that cumulatively service more than three quarters of a trillion dollars of student loan debt.

You would leave a massive mark in the economy with out offsetting the loss. So until the US government buys all the debt, and raises taxes to pay for it, it won’t happen.

No but you can lock the loan at the original price and remove any existing interest and any interest paid automatically goes to the existing principal. I wanted to go to college but i had family to take care of and now my own, an engineering degree doesn’t need to be full of worthless classes and cost 80+k for only 2 years. Thats a scam, I learned more outside of college and make more than most of my friends.

      >an engineering degree doesn’t need to be full of worthless classes and cost 80+k for only 2 years
This is also something I've brought up a lot in these conversations with friends.

Whenever you enroll to become an X, Y, or Z—for a bachelor's or an associate's degree—they require you to take a whole bunch of classes that are simply unnecessary. For example, I bet when you enrolled as an engineering degree, they had you take an English class.

It's the same with all degrees, and the longer you stay in college, the more bullshit classes they either make you take, or convince you to take.

The Liberal Arts degrees are the worst. Everyone knows they're a joke—especially the colleges—so they milk you for every dime. My high school gf was at Brown Uni. taking "Psychedelic, Religious, and Ethnic Botany", "Modern Feminism", "Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre: How Hip Hop Changed American Culture", and of course "Gender Studies". However, there were many, many more in the catalog that I've likely forgotten. I wish I'd kept that list; it was one for the ages.

Anyways, they rope kids into taking these bullshit classes to fill up their "free time" in-between taking "real" classes like "Creative Writing", "Art History", "Modern Dance Theory" and "British Literature". It's all a joke.

She ended up becoming a real estate agent!

i think it's pretty impressive how they are able to argue that the group of people that had the advantage of attending and completing higher education and are presumably working 6+ figure jobs at the highest end of the market are the ones who deserve this massive lump sum of money. billionaires are the last group that need a cash handout, but the second to last group that needs one is college graduates who should be well on their path to an easy life. its amazing how they are able to argue one side of this double edged argument and nobody really calls them out on it on.

USA doesn't own but about 25% of the student loan debt. they can't eat debt in this situation, they have to BUY the debt back from another country

that's why they'll NEVER do it, it would trigger financial problems worse than what we have all over the world simultaneously. Japan is a nation that owns a lot of debt, they're already in trouble and when they have to settle those debts, we're all going down with them. they're the financial glue in the world allowing it all to stay afloat

It’s funny that AOC would say that considering she doesn’t *want* to do anything she promises. She doesn’t do shit to get student debt relief, she doesn’t vote to defund the police when she has a chance to, she doesn’t do shit to get universal healthcare, she doesn’t do shit to “tax the rich”, she votes no on sending money to Israel then cries and changes her vote when she realizes that her political career in garden gnome York is over if she doesn’t kiss Israel’s ass, she votes to send to 60 billion to the Ukraine, etc. Everything is about her political ambitions and only her political ambitions. She’s such an obvious grifter yet her airhead followers don’t seem to have a clue and keep making these retarded memes. The student debt wouldn't "cost" that much because it's mostly canceled profit.
i.e.: I make an item that costs me $100 to put it together but I sell it for $500 because I decided I want to profit $400 from it. If I end up gifting it it won't cost me $500 it costs me $100.
