good lord I thought this was a fashion board

"SLP aesthetic" refers to the style curated by Hedi Slimane during his time at Saint Laurent, though he did a very similar deal at dior homme and celine (rip old celine, <3 phoebe philo). It involves slim-fitting pants, cuban-heeled chelseas/jodhpurs/sidezips/combat boots, lots of patterned and flowy shirts, scarves, double rider jackets, etc

The goal was to evoke youth, androgyny, and rebelliousness by working with the stylistic hallmarks of 60s-80s music culture, from 60s rock and roll, to hard rock/heavy metal, to punk

basically it was a lot of edgy twinks in boots and skinny jeans

lots of things tbhon – originally I spent a lot of time on fashion boards; I’m in a fairly insular fashion discord now, occasionally watch documentaries on designers/houses, watch runways or at least look at the individual looks for loads of designers each fashion week

SLP is kinda canonical to online menswear though, it was a HUGE deal on reddit and the various forums in the mid-2010s, but I wasn’t on /fashion/ then so I can’t say if it was super popular here (though I kinda assume it was)

+ new fit bc I have to go to the grocery store lmao

I swear, if I have to explain "bangs take forever to grow out" to one more person I’m going to lose my mind entirely

I did use reddit as a teenager and don’t really anymore, but to my knowledge the small high fashion community that still exists there is, like, fine. I think there’s still a decent bit of overlap with the little walled garden communities I’ve moved on to. /r/MFA isn’t the be-all and end-all of reddit fashion, and it never really was! I get the vast majority of my inspo watching runways and looking at street style albums at work now lmao

Actually, I b***h people out for discussing culture war silliness in waywt, which is an outfit thread on the fashion board – for people interested in developing new and exciting ways to have questionable opinions, /pol/ is thataway

and like I said, I take a lot of inspo from old SLP stuff, but I’m honestly trying to do this less bc Hedi ruined Celine

That’s the risk you take posting pictures of yourself on the internet. You’re not safe from criticism and scrutiny. In other words, tough shit.

            […]

I do appreciate those of you who don’t foam at the mouth upon seeing a can of bud light, but this kinda proves my point. I’m here to talk about fashion, and even my usual insistence on not discussing gender stuff seems to have distracted the thread from the part of that post I actually cared about writing: comparing Philo and Slimane.

            Ok two things dude:

#1 nobody cares about your little boomer legacy houses it’s stale shit regurgitated ad nauseam

#2 your hair is a fashion atrocity

#3 your so called "fashion" just looks bad i mean your entire thing is just wearing badly constructed ill fitting black clothes it’s so hecking boring, take the criticism and move on, you have no right to gatekeep people from this thread because they disagree with your "fashion" choices, when you get told it looks like crap a few dozen times maybe there’s a modicum of truth in there

          • Anonymous says:

"boomer legacy houses"? What’s the hecking alternative? I don’t see people on here discussing newer, up-and-coming designers like Peter Do or Mame Kuroguchi, so it can’t be that. Are we all to exclusively wear the trendiest tiktok meme aesthetic of the month? To give in to the cultural blitzkrieg of rootless, consumerist streetwear sneakershit?

Hedi Slimane and Phoebe Philo are both younger than Rick Owens, for heck’s sake, and no one on this board is calling his work a "boomer legacy house". In fact, half this board is devoted to discussing traditional menswear and its outgrowths – which is FINE! There’s nothing wrong with traditional/vintage/archival fashion styled well, but acting like Philo-era Celine is part of some antediluvian period irrelevant to modern fashion indicates you’re either 14, illiterate, or both

re: the hair… I really don’t understand what people expect me to do – bangs being horribly awkward to grow out is one of the only certainties in life, right up there with death and taxes. In a month or so, I’ll probably be able to sidesweep them into actual curtain bangs, but until then it’s salt spray, biotin supplements, and suffering.

You can also do cowboy hats (straw in s/s, felt in a/w) or Aussie style crushables. Both of those options are strictly for outdoors though where a baseball hat makes a decent ‘my hair looks like shit today’ fallback plan since you can get away with wearing it inside most places

        At least for me.

        • Anonymous says:

curious as to what is clashing here, color wise.

Pink (overcheck on jacket) and aqua (tie)/light blue (shirt) are complementary colors on the color wheel.

Pink, burgundy (shoes) and nightshade/purple (tie) are analogous and they all match pretty well with army green (pants), brown and beige (jacket).

Army green goes great with both beige and light blue.

As for the shoes, they’re military inspired, much like the pants, what I was going for (out of necessity cause that field was full of mud) is an americana/milspo variant of the italian "spezzato" (wearing a sport coat with trouser separates) that is very popular in japan (picrel).

Not that I live in Japan, however I believe that the juxtaposition of styles is really cool and helps defusing the formality of the jacket/tie combo.

Gianni Agnelli, fellow Torinese, automotive tycoon, billionaire industrialist, among the most authentic icons of "Dolce Vita" and undisputed king of Italian business between the ’60s and the ’80s, and, last but not least, one of the best dressed men in history used to keep them unbuttoned as a touch of sprezzatura (on top of wearing his wristwatch over the shirt sleeve but I wouldn’t recommend that).

yeah I see this in retrospect, but i just threw a bunch of similar vibes stuff into a suitcase tbh

was hoping the ends of the pocket straps and the boot straps would look cool in motion together, and they do, but the elasticated ankles just don’t play well w/ the shafts of the boots, and I can’t tuck em in bc I’ve put velcro on the tongue to keep it upright

still works okay imo, but either I need to re-hem the pants, or do the velcro differently and tuck the cuffs

alright, so I assume this is someone samefagging bc the style is similar, but still

Every time I see a post like this, I have to wonder if I’m being trolled or if this board has just become a hive of philistines. Like, I don’t claim to have perfect fits, but some of these comparisons – ill-fitting dress pants for the uniqlo u pleated pants, "trench coat" or "bathrobe" for a layered, raw-edged linen coat, "maroon wifebeater" for a normal-ass tank top that’s not ribbed like an actual wifebeater- just literally don’t make any sense unless you barely looked at the pic or don’t know anything about anything at all.

Someone with actual fashion knowledge would be able to critique specific aspects of the cut, drape, colors, or synergy between the pieces, or even just say the whole thing’s a non-starter. Instead, you’re just reaching for clumsy and inaccurate comparisons that really only make you look stupid

I couldn’t be hassled to look for a milsurp store nearby (there’s probably none) so I got them from Orslow since I was familiar with their (albeit occasionally erratic) sizing, however they’re most definitelty overpriced for what they are, as opposed to the jeans that are absolutely worth it (denim pants with front and back rise that high ain’t easy to come by).

That was 3 yrs ago though, if I didn’t have these (they still hold up great despite heavy use) I would go for an olive herringbone version instead (like the Bryceland’s P13 or the Warehouse Lot1213 Utility pants) because the fatigues green is really kelly green’ish (see pic) and sometimes clashes a tad too much with darker colors.

Spring/summer jackets/coats for when I’m wearing slacks/pants/trousers and a button up shirt/dress shirt that aren’t sports coats or blazers.

https://www.therealreal.com/products/men/clothing/outerwear/gucci-2019-web-trim-windbreaker-i8ns6 – I actually own the bag that is in the same pattern, might be cute.

    leaning towards https://www.therealreal.com/products/men/clothing/outerwear/gucci-vintage-2008-bomber-jacket-l4v8h (gucci bomber)

    peacoat? https://www.therealreal.com/products/men/clothing/outerwear/yony-striped-peacoat-w-tags-kd1p0

    trucker jacket? https://www.therealreal.com/products/men/clothing/outerwear/alex-mill-houndstooth-print-trucker-jacket-l9fz5

Thinking trench coats are more fallish, I own a couple already but could get a burberry one just because? https://www.therealreal.com/products/men/clothing/outerwear/burberry-trench-coat-l27gi

Colour would be for greys/blacks. Got a suede coat for when I wear brown. Anyways, thoughts?

      >Spring/summer jackets/coats for when I’m wearing slacks/pants/trousers and a button up shirt/dress shirt that aren’t sports coats or blazers.

OrSlow makes chore coats (1940’s and 1950’s models iirc) and a trucker jacket in a "Kinari denim" fabric that is by far the most comfortable summer jacketing cloth I’ve ever worn and I got trousers and sport coats in tropical wool, linen, linen/silk/wool mix, solaro, ripstop and regular cotton.

Super sturdy yet unfathomably light and breathable, I wear it over linen when it’s really hot outside but I still need a jacket for whatever reason and it’s also great for layering from April through October.

No idea why it’s marketed as "denim" by the way, it’s totally misleading; the jacket is no thicker than a heavy oxford shirt, if that. Picrel of my 40’s. The color is off-white.

      Look it up.

    • Anonymous says:

Not the biggest fan of the windbreaker; the bomber is fine. Both the trucker jacket and the peacoat seem like an odd match of material/pattern to style; trucker jackets are traditionally a bit less dressy and made of denim/canvas/leather; peacoats are usually a heavy warm wool like an overcoat would be.

I do think the distinction between pants/trousers and slacks, and between a button-up and a dress shirt, matters here – in chinos and an oxford button-up, I’d recommend smth traditional and outdoorsy like the aforementioned trucker jackets or a chore coat, or even a leather moto jacket. For slacks and a dress shirt, I personally would just find a lightweight unstructured sport coat; it seems a bit odd to go that formal and opt for something else unless you have a particular vision

The trench coat is kinda neat, aggressively militaristic in a way that I can appreciate, but probably too warm for the summer unless you’re in a cooler climate – I have a long wool/cashmere overcoat in a similar material weight and I shelve it for the summer bc it’s just too stuffy.

    >but I’m honestly trying to do this less bc Hedi ruined Celine
    wdym?

I’m only semi-serious about this, but Celine was previously under the creative directorship of Phoebe Philo, who was/is known for a minimalist, stylish, and trend-averse approach to women’s fashion. Notably, her work was often described as being oriented towards the female gaze, intended to "reveal and not display" women’s beauty, which is something of a rarity even at such a high level of luxury

She eventually stepped down (and later launched her own label) but a lot of people were really annoyed that Slimane replaced her and basically did the same thing he did everywhere else (putting twinks in skinny jeans). I will say, though: Slimane gets a bit of a bad rep, but he’s had a consistent vision for years that’s nonetheless not totally unchanging, and his clothes are incredibly wearable and well-curated. I don’t think he’s a hack or anything, or even really a one-hit wonder, but a lot of Philo fans found the sudden switch from Philo’s understated maturity to Slimane’s youthfully androgynous-masculine sexuality and rebellion to be jarring and a bit regressive.

I think the problem you’re running into here is that the jacket looks really worn but the jeans look brand new and unfaded, and smth about that looks off – so yeah, maybe a different wash, or just letting those fade a bit, idk

the rise on those jeans looks strangely low w/ the jacket, also, but that might just be the angle or the way the shirt is sitting

    • Anonymous says:

I personally think the cuffs on the jeans disrupt the flow of the outfit, might look better if you hem them so you have a clean transition into the black boots. If you’re gonna stick with the cuffs white or grey sneakers would probably look cool.

threw on a fit to walk my dog. bad lighting sorry.

looks good as-is. indigo top black bottom only looks off when the jacket is brand new raw or the silhouette is hecked. a lot of anons on this board act like color/lightness is the only way to create visual separation but texture can too. and you don’t even necessarily need/want any with denim tuxedos. silhouette is what is key with them. trust your eyeballs. if it looks and feels off its off. if it feels right its right. i think that jacket looks fine with black jeans anywhere from brand new raw black to worn in and grayed. i’ve found exceptions to every "rule" i’ve heard with denim tuxedos. to my eyes your fit looks good.
if you want some indigo jeans with visual separation get greencast or natural dyed jeans (pmuch the same end result.) it looks good to my eyes.
type iii’s look the best with straight cut or not that tapered jeans, like you have on.
i disagree with the anon saying the cuffs look bad too, your legs are long enough it doesnt throw your proportions off. the pants might be a bit long when uncuffed for shoes tho.

i’m sure some anons are trolling. i was just good faith posting the things i would change about the fit in order to get perceived as the gender you claim to want to be perceived as by the average person.
one way i filter out stupidation while still getting value out of peoples comments on my shit is: i only read the parts about my fit and i just ignore the comments where people whine about things they don’t like about my appearance, unless its relevant to my fit such as how my fit plays into my body proportions, when i’m trying to get fashion advice and crit.

really nice touch with the "this post was written by a trans person btw."
no wonder you’re so sure some anons are trolling

its multiple people calling you out. maybe try not wearing a women’s blouse if you’re going to berg out that people don’t address you with male pronouns? maybe the fact that you assumed i was trolling by saying i’m trans means i’m better than you at this & my advice is worth listening to? LOL’d.

why post in waywt if legitimate advice makes you schiz out
            >wants boymoding advice
            >thinks i’m trolling bc good at boymoding
maybe i’m just good at androgyny further solidifying my advice that wearing a womens boat-neck won’t get you sir’d.

I’m the one w/ the shredded linen coat/various rick pieces/oxblood guidis (to whom he might’ve been referring), and I’d add – I’m totally down to take advice; when one anon said my boots didn’t work w/ the pants I had on, I was open to hearing why

the issue at hand is that "lol tranny," "get a haircut," and "back in my day, men wore button-up shirts" aren’t stylistic critiques or even unsolicited advice in a different vein, they’re a pastiche of disgruntled-old-man complaints from like three generations

          • Anonymous says:

bro your hair looks like a joke it’s SERIOUSLY unfashionable
the only way a bowlcut looks good is when you don’t have the side fringes
also long hair on older guys like you makes you look haggard

none of my posts were like that though. you’ve convinced yourself two different posters are the same person. i replied to the poster who was complaining about getting gendered as female and made constructive suggestions on how to make the fit more andro to masc leaning without changing the over-all idea going on. generally if you’re trying to get gendered as male a boat/u neck shirt isn’t the way to go even if its a men’s rick piece. i know what i’m talking about i’m a literal god of androgyny and you dress like i did 10yrs ago.

          • Anonymous says:

if you’re feminine presenting (painted nails, longish hair, layered hair, probably on hrt face etc) your fit needs to lean masc to look andro.
if you’re masc presenting the fit needs to lean feminine to look andro. that’s where stuff like rick tops come into play. look at the models he uses.
i’m assuming the goal is androgyny since the person in question looks rather female presenting but wishes to be gendered male? maybe i’m off on that assumption?

            >complaining about getting gendered as female
            where ITT did this happen
            >maybe i’m off on that assumption?
shocker, assuming things makes you look like a stupid
            nice job here

nta but its acceptable if they’re in the process of growing their hair out.

      we r 2 separate anons.

not him but i assumed you were the same too kek

we have different hair, very different styles of dress, fairly different body shapes, and different tattoos, plus I always take my pics in my bedroom mirror

I’m honestly baffled how this could happen, like we have similar collarbones and that’s kinda it

      • Anonymous says:

dark medium length hair fairly square jaw feminine presenting its easy to see the similarities, i dont go through every fit pic with a fine toothed comb

hispanics and maybe even indians are a lot less predatory towards white guys with money but i personally never was attracted to them. if i was that’d be the move.
passportbro-ing (abroad or back home) tends to work out if you’re a white guy capable of getting b***hes who got doompilled on the status of white women. tends not to work out as good for dorky incel types in the long run.

Is it weird that I’m not sure which pant color is better here? Also maybe having the shoes tie into the pink shirt would be cool

      • blueboots says:

        >Is it weird that I’m not sure which pant color is better here?
not really, the shade of blue-green that the pants come off as in the photo is really fitting for the rest of the outfit. with the blue boots it divides the outfit into half pink and half blue which is pretty cool
        >Also maybe having the shoes tie into the pink shirt would be cool
I could definitely see myself wearing pink laces with the boots in this fit, but then the boots would look weird with my orange shirts and it’s too impractical to change them. Fully pink shoes wouldn’t be my style here, I prefer wearing more colors over matching several pieces

my man that is a ladies shirt and doesn’t fit your shoulders it looks really really weird
also cranberry is the color of bad hotels and thanksgiving maybe just try a nice french blue button up
ok dude good luck in your fashion journey
