Was Zappa in black face on Joe's Garage?

The other day an old friend of mine was flipping through my record collection, like a buddy from waaaaay back. He continuously pointed out artist he distinctly remembered that I was super into for a summer or after a bad break-up , things of that nature.

Eventually he points out a lack of Frank Zappa, a man who I swore on my mothers grave was a clear under-rated musical genius after having discovered his music 24 hours earlier. I feel like a lot of people had similar experience at 18 with some artist or another. Particularly mine came after hearing Joe's Garage. So in order to keep the Zappa loving 18 year old in myself alive, I had to have it.

On the way to the record store we start having a discussion about the album artwork. He had confused it with some other album which featured Frank's majestic facial hair and a goofy outfit, but I corrected him and told him it was the one with Zappa and a mop. He knew exactly the one and said "oh yeah the one where he's in black face!"

.....what?

I assured him it was mud, hence the mop. To which he responded "then why is it only on his face?" I'm literally speechless and I can't even enjoy Joe's Garage right now.

Zappa noticeably doesn't have the white or red paint around the mouth that blackface often involves, and he's not doing any stereotypically demeaning thing while in the makeup, and nothing on the album has anything to do with blackface or race in general, so that reading doesn't really hold up to any level of investigation.

i'm convinced that unless you're literally doing a watermelon-eating yessa massa routine, nobody is actually, genuinely offended by black face, they just perform offense because they feel like they're supposed to
