yes it definitely wasn't the reformation which definitely didn't lay the groundwork for the enlightenment and liberalism

It was the catholic church that laid the groundwork for the reformation.

My post was against the idea that historical events are not prone to dialectical analysis. Protestantism was not caused by the ground laid by Catholicism ---it used it as a resource and a scapegoat. Protestantism is not christianism, at least in the sence that Catholicism constructed the concept of Christianism. (English and US people may not like it, because they are educated that way; but everyone else know this for fact).

                >Catholicism constructed the concept of Christianism.
Very much not true. Catholicism was created as a result of the Emperor Constantine. There was a lot of different Christians before then. I mean come on.

Did any of those pre-catholic conceptions of Christianism were used by Protestantism?

By the radical reformation somewhat. Luther and the descendants of his movement were beholden to the catholic tradition just not the Catholic hierarchy. I'm not sure that it's fair though to criticize for not using pre-nicene conceptions when those were violently persecuted and destroyed for 1000 years though.

            i largely agree with this
in practical terms the reformation was simply the widespread theft of church property and usurping of political power

More akin the free men from cities, or bourgeois by other name. Of course catholic church not responding to the complaints not just from the people, but clergy as well had an impact. So there was tension, and vatican did its thing and declared everyone else wrong, making the argument into conflict.

while i'm sympathetic to the fact that the complaints were handled poorly, said complaints were merely a pretense for politically motivated actors
unless that's the point you're making in which case i concur

The papacy being the foremost of these politically motivated actors.

Catholic church cares first about politics, and religion is the secondary matter. It will betray its stock for political power, always has always will.

          >Have you read the old testament?
I read in the New Testament that the OT existed to create the New Testament which is what we follow now.

          >Did you learn about Christianity from children's books?
No, I just read the part where it said to turn the other cheek, love your enemies, and only the sinless should punish sinners.
