is there a better alternative or method?

I find YUMI exFAT to be more reliable, but you have to use the program to add ISOs. I use it for my flash drive full of Windows and Linux ISOs and bootable tools.

Ventoy is GOAT. It BTFOs all other methods in my experience. I've successfully booted everything from Win, Lin, Android x86, firmware update bootdisks for old hardware, CheckRa1n, etc. No issues, and is customizable. How will other virgin boot utils ever recover?

medicat is better than ventoy, simple as. tons of utilities and tools on top of basically having ventoy functionality built in, where there's a folder you can just drop ISOs into

can I use this to succesfully make an openBSD or netBSD live usb to put on my ancient T40 thinkpad?

if your T40 supports booting from USB, yes. if not, there are other more advanced methods that can be deployed- like pic related- with or without Ventoy. PLOP boot manager is a must-have utility if you work on really old PCs.

Does just the assets pane not load for you? Do you perhaps use some weird browser like Pale Moon or otherwise make parts of the site nonfunctional?

Filenames are case-sensitive. Perhaps try using tab completion?
