Wilson couldn't even get 1 yard in his prime in the most important game of his life. what makes you think he could get 5 in a meaningless week 1 game when he's 5 years over the hill

the tradeoff was only a slightly shorter field goal. I suspect it was slightly better to have kept the offense in the field, but you've laid out an incomplete equation. It's not a 64 yarder vs. a 5 yard conversion. It's 64 yarder vs. 5 yard converstion AND a ~55 yarder

        or 1. depends what happened.

a 50 yard kick is much easier than a 60 yard kick. Kickers consistently hit 50 yet nobody does it for 60

I don't think you understand how the math on something like a field goal works- a 60 yard field goal is hard but doable for most good kickers in the league, only twice has a 64+ yard kick been made in history.

clearly i'm not the dumb one here. clearly it's harder, but you have to multiply it by the likelihood of converting.

the likelihood of converting with a mobile qb known for pulling shit like this out of his ass vs asking a kicker to do something he's never done before and is arguably more difficult in a hostile environment? You ride with your franchise qb every time especially when you have 2 timeouts afterwards

mcmanus attempting a 64 yard field goal at Lumen Field which is 16 feet above sea level is moronic and attempting to defend that decision in any capacity is stupid. his longest was 61 yards. They had plenty of time to make a play. multiple plays in fact. it was just bad coaching and time management all around.

I haven't watched football in years so I'm out of touch but this Hackett is a first-year head coach, yeah? If Wilson is a dud acquisition, Hackett is gonna be KIA as well, yeah? So why not let Wilson have the ball and hope he gives both of you another year of employment? I don't see where Hackett's interests are served by trying a FG that his kicker missed twice.

    >run the ball at the 1

He really can't win, can he? Broncos tossed away at least 6 points there granted Seattle did the same.

  20. 2 years ago

with that little time left the seahawks were probably content to give up the five yards and let the broncos attempt at 58ish yarder, which is still a tough kick in a tough atmosphere.

what defenses really don't want to give up on that 4th and 5 is some big chunk play that gets enabled because they were playing too tight.

      Anonymous

They wouldn't have had to kick it right away if they'd converted. They'd have had 30-something seconds left plus timeouts which means they could run at least one or two more plays comfortably and got even closer. But you're right that they underutilized the threat of going upfield. Seattle needed to try and stop them from converting but giving up a big gain that turned the fg into a chip shot or just a touchdown would be way worse than letting them convert the first.

If Denver had come out with like a five-wide formation and sent multiple guys deep Seattle would have had to go with extra defensive backs and had them moving away from the line of scrimmage rather than towards it. Then you just have one guy crossing over the middle or the Russ just roll out and run up the sideline for the five yards. And if they don't commit to stopping the deep pass? Frick it, take the shot. You have timeouts. You can use the whole field. The defense needs to cover 50 yards deep and you only need 5. The more I think about it the less sense it makes.

It would be a memorably awful decision even with Zach Wilson at quarterback, doing it with Russell Wilson puts it into game of throws territory

  22. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

The only thing anybody needs to know about why he made this decision is that he worked under Doug Marrone (aka The Prince of Punts) at Syracuse and the Bills. He is predisposed to take the conservative route.

      Anonymous

      >conservative route
gaining 5 yards with time outs is the more conservative route than kicking a 64 yard field goal. Statistically he took the risky route
