Trash or misunderstood masterpiece?

The Toyota MR2 Spyder

Should I buy this or a miata?

All slander or appreciation are welcome. This thread will decide if I buy it instead of a miata NC which go around for similar prices albeit not as in good shape as this particular Toyota (pic related).

For context:

>81k miles
>$10k
>2 owners
>2005 facelift model so no pre-cat issues even though I would remove it regardless as prevention

Its not an mr2 is Spyder. It's an MRS.
MR Spyder. They're awful. Toyota cuffed the suspension to deal with snap overseer so the understeers like a God damn monster. Somehow they managed to cramp the engine bay even more than the aw1x and aw2x combined. Might as well cut a tunnel out and run the diff upside down.

This, it's not a real MR2 and it never will be.

Not a single word here is correct

keep seething SW20 owner, the second gen is the odd one out :^)

      Had sw20.
Mrs is way better in every way other than no hard top.
Faster, better handling, more fun, shits all over sw20 on tracks, infinetly more reliable, easier to work on.

        >MRS Faster than SW20

I own both, and this right here is bullshit. 3S-GTE SW20 is significantly faster than the MRS for straight line acceleration. MRS definitely handles better, and is a better track car.

MRS with a 2ZZ-GE swap is damn near perfection though.

not the worst deal in the current fricked market if its rust free and lacks problems
that or an NC miata are both pretty comparable in the "i want to get out and push" class
i would get the NC for more parts availability tbh

If you are going to work on the car yourself get the NC instead, MRS is rather cramped to work on. MRS has barely any frunk space to carry anything compared to the NC. Performance wise they are dead even. MRS has a more neutral setup to how it handles leaning more towards understeer, NC is all about oversteer. NC has a much larger aftermarket if you are going to get into modifying it. Two guys from my driving group have them. From cruising backroads to autocross they both seem to be equally fun.

If it comes with a factory hardtop I'd definitely take the MR2. The Miata will be better for most drivers, but I already had one, so I'm biased towards something different.

i dont have tons of experience, but i did recently buy a 2000 mr2 spyder and it's a blast to drive. never heard of the understeer problem and have never encountered understeer while driving it, but im not taking it to the track. in fact, it's pretty easy to oversteer and induce oversteer even with the 1zz and open diff. aftermarket is pretty decent, but tiny compared to a miata. of course being transverse mid engine, it's tough to work on without removing things, but that's part of many mid engine cars. i feel like these will appreciate with time and the op example looks impeccable. if you got the cash, i'd recommend it.

i will never unsee this now, thanks

I'd love an MR2 but the first two generations are very pricey now. I've been toying around with the idea of getting a spyder but they're all the SMT auto thing in 'straya. Kind of cool that it is a factory pseudo-sequential, but apparently it shifts quite lazily. For similar money I'm sure I could get a slightly worse condition NB or NC MX-5 and have better aftermarket support. I do think the spyder looks quite nice with the factory hardtop, it just gets a bad wrap because of how beautiful and iconic the first two MR2 gens are.

The A&W11 and the 2nd are acceptable for men to drive. These are not. I guess if your other choice is a Miata it doesn't matter.

It looks like a girls car without the hardtop. Needs its gearbox and engine swapped out to be better than the previous gen mr2s. If you're gonna spend all that money doing one up, you may as well just buy a used Elise which is objectively superior in every way except comfort.

Found a 2003 with 30k miles, picked it up quick. I enjoy it as a secondary vehicle; it's fun. Very fricking impractical though lmao, it has zero (0) space.

MR2 hands down, it's faster, tighter, and just cooler tbh. Feels badass just having a midship at all. at least, to me. I test drove a miata and then the mr2 the next day, it just feels like a direct upgrade and costs less for the same condition.

  15. 2 years ago

Buy the MR-S. The only gripes I have is it's a shit daily driver and the aftermarket is relatively expensive compared to miata. But you can easily get them to sun 2000 pounds full interior and I mog miatas at autox consistently. I have more to say if you want to hear it.

NC Miata. Faster with a better aftermarket, usually cheaper, and not as inflated as the MR2 Spyder because the ND overshadows it (despite being similar in performance)

    Could also pay a little more and finance a $12-15k 12-15 FRS/BRZ

IMo they're a trash car but they have the potential to be a good car if you swap the engine for a 2zz.

What the frick were toyota thinking when they put a 1zz in this thing?

Is it misunderstood? I thought they were well regarded for what they are.

Well regarded by who? The mr-s got the gutless 1zz engine while the corolla and celica got the high performance 2zz variant.
What is this? Opposite world? The fwd cars get the good engine while the mid-engine "sports car" gets the shit engine?
      Toyota seriously fricked up.

        Anonymous

"For what it is". It's a fun, reliable Toyota. If you want a serious, track-ready, mid-engined performance car get a wienerster or a C8. If you're comparing to a Miata, then a Mister 2 or a Mister S is comparable.

          Anonymous

You're being moronic on purpose. The fwd cars are supposed to get the crappy engine and the MR gets the good engine.
Toyota did the exact opposite of that.

So swap it, c**t. Swap it with an LS for all I care.

This might shock you but 99% of people who buy a car don't swap the engine so you're moronic to normalize such things.

2zz swap is about as easy as an engine swap gets

this, its the same as swapping a B18c1 into a non VTEC chassis
i.e. uses same engine mounts, ecu plug n play. *maybe a little re pinning of the ecu harness for the VVT
