If you're learning french, spanish or italian you are HSTS.
If you're learning japanese you are AGP.
If you're learning Russian you haven't gotten over your chud phase.
If you're learning anything else you're autistic or you have a very specidic reason.

>t. hsts who did a modern languages degree with french and spanish, mastered both to fluency and now living in france for four years
would also like to add that modern languages is one of the most fembrained university degrees you can do, at least if you're from ireland or the UK. it seems to attract more guys in non-anglophone countries, at least from what i saw when i did my master's in france, but my classes in undergrad were like 90% straight cis women and the remaining 10% were mostly gay guys. now i work in translation and the demographics at my job are more or less the same.
how scared are you of deepl and other machine translation? I'm also considering going into translation, but I'm scared it'll mostly stop existing in 10 years
ngl i don't recommend translating as a career for various reasons (though it can be nice if you know a language like japanese or chinese) and i'm looking into moving out of it. if you do want to work in translation i'd just try and get straight into project management, or maybe try something with a similar skill set but less likely to be automated (technical writing comes to mind). there'll always be work in stuff like localisation for games too but the pay/conditions are variable.
machine translation is already here, my company basically just puts texts through deepl and i have to edit them afterwards. it's definitely not ready to fully replace humans yet (not even in my very common language pairs) but it's making me sort of lose my passion for translating. but where i mostly take issue with the field is that the people i know in it work an obscene amount of hours and don't really earn *that* much. money isn't super important to me but work life balance is and it seems to often be quite poor in this sector.
tysm, that really helps me a lot
What about if you're learning Rust?
prob falls under agp most likely
Crab brained
What if I’m learning Hymmnos?

It means you can't read. Check out the last clause in the OP.
AGP and HSTS are a psy-op from deliberate scientific misconduct in bad faith. You either have dysphoria or you're a trender.
