I'm a zoomer and I feel like a lot of my peers are really into this stuff. I'm open to the idea, think it would be fun, but probably couldn't do it indefinitely.

BLM is also bearu of land management. Don't see too many blacks out in the open country but warm border states will be swarming with people walking in from mexico looking for food/water and vans to haul their frens to town

This, "van life" is cool if you have a van converted to a small RV that you can travel in for part of the year. Living completely full time in a van sounds awful. Like if you lived in a van 24/7, even something as routine as mail delivery becomes a serious problem. You need a PO Box set up, and then need a mail service to forward you important mail at whatever campground you are at or whatever, and that's one of the smaller issues.

Not having a bathroom and shower on board is a problem as well, imagine waking up in the night to shit or piss and you have to leave your home.

If I was making passive income, and only had to do like 5 hours of work from a laptop each week, then yeah it'd be cool to do Van Life for a couple months in the summer while seeing national parks or traveling for concerts or whatever. But otherwise it seems like it would suck. Plus in modern America, you have to contend with homeless drug addicts in many of the parking lots and places where you'll sleep overnight. It's not as comfy as it seems

Why wouldn't you just get a bucket with a toilet seat on it, a few packs of wet wipes, and keep an empty wide mouth gallon jug for piss? I can cleanly take a shit in a Subaru

          >Why wouldn't you just get a bucket with a toilet seat on it, a few packs of wet wipes, and keep an empty wide mouth gallon jug for piss?

because it's fucking disgusting. Having a bucket with shit in it, in a small space, is just gross. It's going to smell, you won't make it totally smell proof. At least in a motorhome or large RV there's a plumbing system and you can flush it to a smellproof tank. A bucket is just gross period

the water in a toilet serves to stop most of the smell from fouling up the place. a bucket wont have that and the interior of a van WILL absorb the odours it'll be like an indian's house where the walls have a curry smell that can't be removed, except instead of curry, it's just straight up shit.

have you ever had a shit where a bit of it was poking above the water? Notice how the stink is greatly reduced when you flush a bit so the shit moves under the water line?

my first vanlife trip the van had to go in for repair for a day or two and ended up in there for a week... during a monsoon... we stayed on a mattress on pallets under a tarp with a pirate and a stripper. the floor was made of seashells and flooded and it was beautiful aside from all the bugs crawling onto the matttress... great experience that road trip was, changed my life, i still like to hop in my truck and go on months long trips.
      ...$700 van

most compitent/frugal van lifers figure out how to work on their own vehicles

Just drive an economy car to a motel. They are cheaper, better handling and faster. The motel is more comfy, get a nice pool and gym to play in and breakfast in the morning, and you don't have to drive a big stupid van

      car + hotel + eating out= $160/day
      vanlife+cooking gear = $30/day

Van life sucks. Save up, by remote lake property, even if it's in another country. Build a small cabin and enjoy true peace away from everyone. If I didn't have to work I'd never leave my property.

vanlife allows you to quickly go from enjoying nature to the hustle and bustle of the city, to other types of nature !!!with better weather!!! to other types of cities with less or more hustle and bustle.

Motels are way more comfortable. Spend $ 80 Sleep under clean sheets and take a hot shower instead of waking up dirty in a van abd smelling stinky all day

some people value comfort less than others and are happy with stinky vanlife... anyways, if you stay in a nice cool climate, you dont really begin to stink for a while....

      >vanlife is for richkids
its also for poor kids who cant find a decent job in an expensive rent city but still want to have fun money.

I let myself to slide through the van life rabbit hole during some stressful times. Researching it helped me escape reality. My conclusion was it can be cool to run away some weekends or maybe a month or two max. Basic stuff becomes cumbersome: shower, cooking, peeing, shitting, avoiding cops if stealth camping, relationships, repairs, accidents, spend a lot preparing the van, steals, electricity, water... You can see videos of van lifers crumbling down, getting to a motel. "I needed it." It's like they rediscover the wheel or something. A regular home is just better.

It's doable but not how you think. It's just an expensive inconvenient vacation

Anyone with a nice looking van isn't saving any money on living costs. You have to build the interior yourself, use family money, or have an uncommon job. My friend did it a budget way and it got old for him quick. One van blew a tranny, the other broke down constantly, now he has a smaller version of the first that's great, but cost like 5x more than the others.

Here is a guy who did it full time. Keep in mind he had an end goal and a cushy firefighter facilities for his work periods

Horse trailers/livestock trailers aren’t that cheap usually if you are getting one for under 2 grand you are gonna have a lot do work ahead of you . Plus they have very rudimentary suspension if they have them at all anything you put back there has to be incredibly strong so it doesn’t break in half from the vibration.

Are proper camping grounds nonexisting in the US or are they fucking expensive, as I always see people talking about spending nights at the Walmart and such?
Wouldn´t buying an old but decent RV or camper trailer and spending your nights at a camping ground be easier and cheaper than buying and converting a van and then spending nights at super market parking lots?
At least here, in Finland, people who can´t afford a holiday cabin, get an RV or a trailer and a spot at their favorite camping grounds and use that set up. When they get bored of the same spot, they move to next one. At a camping ground near me a spot for your RV is 450€/year and they have all the regular stuff there(shower+sauna, waste disposal, electricity, laundry, gas bottle swap, fireplace and so on).

campground $25+ per night to stay in a parkinglot surrounded by trees. or walmart parking lot surrounded bushes

... i cant find a pic but many many camp grounds are just a bunch of tent spaces + parking spot all within 15-25feet from the next tent space + parking spot....

and often walmart is in the middle of town while campground is 20min or an hour out of town....

and then if im going to nature, ill go to free BLM land or fire access road campsites instead of some $40 camp ground with a fucking ranger/nanny watching over you. i like getting naked and shitting in a hole i dug.

Civilization is plumbing and sanitation. Two things that are very difficult to setup in a van.

Aside from that, people are too used to having a bunch of space. Especially the need for standing height. Go outside, plan to occupy a spot outside your vehicle to do things.
      >But the rain and snow!
Awnings. And why are you vancamping if you hate the elements?
      >But the naggers and cops and bums outside!
Why vanlife in the fucking city?
      >I have to stand to shower!
There are other better ways to bathe. Especially if you're out in the fucking middle of nowhere with a slim chance of being bothered
      >I'm at the RV park!
Then they should have facilities shouldn't they?

We have RV parks and campgrounds that will provide hookups and maybe have some public facilities. Otherwise it's just endless wilderness on federal lands. I'm assuming most van dwellers are trying to reach such spots.

Zoomer here. I think van life and small houses are dumb. I have a millennial sister who’s bf works at a fucking Food4Less, lives in his van, have to park in an area to sleep near the bay without getting in trouble, can’t bathe until they crash at our house for a few days every week, have to use the bathroom at a fucking restaurant or store (if it’s late at night idk what they fucking do), it’s cramped, boring, I don’t know why gen y and z would want to do this.

I get that it’s getting pricier and pricier to get a house or apartment and having a minimum wage job barely does shit if at all, but I can’t see myself doing something like that, I’d rather live in the shittiest one room apartment in a shitty part of town than living in a small vehicle or being homeless on the streets. Feels good being special needs and having a few more years to get independent and have support from regional center programs that help with special needs people.

And buy small houses I mean those very fucking tiny trendy houses you can’t fit your head in built in the middle of nowhere. Remember those? 2015 there was some HGTV show highlighting those, I’m tall, it’d be cramped and claustrophobic as fuck for my anxiety.

      What if you
      >buy van
      >live in van
      >save money
      >buy property
      >live in van on property while you're building a shack
Now that sounds based to me

I got into it simply because I wanted to travel the country for cheap while I think about where I'd like to settle
