look dork, heating water is the least of our bills over here. i live in the most energy inefficient possible colorado style a-frame house, 3300 square feet with a literal 40 foot ceiling in the living room. we've got bigger fish to fry. that little tiny bit of water ain't shit for a family of 5. I have TWO 60 gallon water heaters. 4 bedrooms, each with their own full bath. I'm not bragging, it's excessive and I know it... but you have to understand that would be absolutely retarded for most people here, especially considering our energy is like .095 USD per kwh (north tx). shit, my attic is probably hot enough to heat water most months of the year. lots of houses have solar, but it's better spent running our air conditioners because it gets hot as fucking balls. your little water thermos is neat and all, but here in america we take 40 minute showers and keep cranking the heat until the tank is empty. someone tell him about hot carl's, he'll flip his shit.

You keep mentioning the square feet, as if that makes a difference. Maybe you can't grasp the fact that there are different size tanks, or can install multiple if needed.
If it comes down to an aesthetic question, yes they aren't very pretty. But the size of the house plays a role only in your mind.

I'm giving you tough love fren. Without petroleum distillates (kerosine, diesel, jet fuel) you've got no shipping, no trucking, no farm equipment, no air travel. Are you telling me Greeks aren't smart enough to build even one fucking nuclear power plant? One would be enough to not only make cheap energy for your whole country, but you could make good money exporting to mentally ill green party in Germany.

Your tiny little rooftop solar water heater (that only works on clear days) isn't even a fucking rounding error in the GDP of Greece.

Unfuck yourself, son of Athens. Build a nuclear powerplant and start looking into domestic oil and gas production. Stop sucking German cock for pity pennies.

No. It makes a tank of hot water thats enough for a quick shower OR doing dishes OR a load of laundry. All of those countries use expensive electricity to heat their water, so for a young couple without kids, it saves them a few bucks a month and will actually pay for itself. Dont try it anywhere in the USA outside of the sunbelt unless it's just for virtue signalling points.

I'm sorry, but that's nothing. My family comes from a long line of sewage treatment entrepreneurs and we take as many as 20 showers a day, and are washing our hands at least 30 times an hour. It takes at least 10 gallons of water just to clean the tea cups we use for brunch. The dog needs washing every day so we take a shower before, sometimes during, and after we wash the dog. That little tub of water you go through might last an hour, would be gone in 5 seconds in our household.

Lots of Americans have solar panels
Some power companies will install them for free and you get a credit on your bill
    Otherwise do it yourself
If you can plug in a VCR, you can figure out solar panels
Just be sure to check what the bus on your panel is rated for, which will inform you as to how much power you’re allowed to backfeed

  12. 3 weeks ago

Those panels don't seem to be very efficient and there are other options which capture more heat and some even work under the snow.

bro.. nobody is wise to the in ground geothermal heat pumps.

when we're talking about the government rebated ones, we're talking about the little ductless ones, that have a fan/radiator thats what most people install. and once it goes below zero, they're as energy effecient as baseboard electric heaters.

                t. laughs in Southern Californian. no need for cooling in the summer or heat in the winter. 20-22C year round. could be February, could be August. not sure what "weather" even means. we sort of have rain sometimes for 3-4 months out of the year, but that's about it.

                b. tons of homeless, but easily ignored. also probably 1 in 10 people in my county are illegals. they pick the crops, cook on the line in nice restaurants, clean the hotel rooms, and keep our beautiful gardens immaculate. not a great deal, but the best deal we're gonna get. if we deported them all, the local economy would totally collapse. your average mexican illegal has a great work ethic and are super polite and let you cut in line at the mini-mart. i would take mexicans over blacks any day of the week.

      >OK give it to me straight. Do these work?
      That's a yes with a but.

Yes they heat water and can even heat water to near boiling. But they are highly dependent on direct sunlight, and once the sun is down you are not getting more hot water till noon if you don't have a backup system.

For places that have lots of sun (doesn't strictly speaking need to be hot, I've had snow melt off my black BBQ when the air temperature was -30C.) This can save some energy.

I see those on off-gridder houses.

They work in the winter, as long as it's sunny out. They might not always work but that's the sacrifice you make for having your own hot water rather than relying on the grid.

If it's Winter I'm heating my home with a fire. It's easy to have unlimited hot water, and just because it's sunny, doesn't mean it's above freezing or there is no cold wind. The panels could have snow covering them.

Off grid is the only use case I can justify here in Alberta. They have some technology called "vacuum tube" solar water heaters that can get up to 563°F and even have good efficiency in overcast days. If I lived in New Mexico I would go for the flat panel solar water heater.

Vacuum solar tube water heaters will work in -50C. The downside is they are so efficient that they don't generate a lot of waste heat to melt any snow that accumulates.

Currently sitting in the cozy passive solar heated house I built by myself. Those roof mounted solar water heaters are not going to work up here. It hit -7°f in late October... that is -21°c to you monkeys. Most power here is priced just below what it would cost for alternative systems. I just replaced an on demand water heater with an inefficient tank heater. Why? The technology is constantly changing and the kike manufacturers make sure you can't fix shit yourself by discontinuing parts or other ways. For example I had a thermister go out. Normally, it would cost you 69¢ plus shipping. But because they make sure you can't read the values on it or get the part number they charge $69 plus shipping. Easily fixable things are inefficient. Efficient things are made unfixable. They fuck you or they fuck you. Most people take the easy route.
