This album is the most "professional" sounding, tightly written album of the DLR years.

This album is the most "professional" sounding, tightly written album of the DLR years. Afterwards everything is more loose, wild and spontaneous. Whether you prefer that or not is whatever, but I find it interesting that it was their debut

Didn’t they record it a few times with different producers? I thought gene Simmons even produced one version

i admit that i got filtered by the shitty guitar playing. the slower and simpler, the better. i should know: i'm a guitar player, and I always play slow and simple stuff because, although I could easily do it like EVH, if i wanted to, I don't want to... because I don't like it.

They had years to hone the material. II was thrown together to capitalize on the success of this.

I'll argue it's 1984 since it was the first album recorded at 5150 studios and was the one I grew up listening to the most. Forget Jump, Panama, and even Hot for Teacher IMO these are the best two songs from that album.

Ok why did Van Halen pan the guitar *like that* for their entire fucking career? Like what the actual fuck is going on

Dry signal in one channel, slapback in the other. Classic studio trick.

Gene recorded a demo with them featuring many of the album songs and a couple of kiss tracks. Then he got them signed to Casablanca, a total fucking failure of a company. They were so fucked that Van Halen was basically trapped with nothing to show for it. Gene got their contract torn up and they went separate ways. The demo sounds great

I know Gene tore it up once they had attention from another label, I always heard that much

I also always heard he suggested they use the name "Daddy Long Legs"
