I dunno that one scene where they wanted to recreate a movie chase scene and Clarkson wanted to show them realistically disabling the traction control was pretty funny

Im pretty sure a huge part of the love for this show comes from nostalgia. We grew up with it, and for many of us it was our first view into the car enthusiast world and culture.
Watching the show now with neutral and more experienced eyes quickly reveals the show for what it really was this whole time: a watered down introductory "babys first somewhat educational car program". They never REALLY targeted the hardcore enthusiast crowd.
Its like the Donut Media of the early 2000s

This is just straight up fricking contrarian bullshit and you know it, I rewatched the first half last year and you can really see them get into their groove. It was basic, fun, and yes entertainment but they clearly knew what they were talking about. Consider yourself and others lucky we got to enjoy this show week by week coming out. Grand Tour is great but with an unlimited budget you can make anything entertaining with enough money poured into it.

        Anonymous

Yeah I completely agree we are really lucky we did have such great show in 2000.

Remember episode where they go to Deep South and write slogans like Man's Love rules , Nascar Sucks and Hillary for a president . It was all for to make entertaining show . ''New'' top gear did decorate cars in LGBT rainbow flag because Brunei don't gives a frick about homosexuals .

I live in a swamp in south alabama, pic rel is from my driveway.
You can drive a miata around here blasting weeb music and the worst that'll happen is you'll get coal-rolled or a truck will intentionally cut you off.
I still thought it was funny - rednecks around here are backwards as frick, but it was obviously staged like all their other shit.

I wouldn't be so sure man, rednecks riding around in the back of a pickup and being really weird was something I did see in Alabama when I was there. I wouldn't be surprised if they were real rednecks that were for real angry but someone on the crew knew about the gas station prior and had them go there on purpose to cause it.

Yeah, I grew up in Europe, I know that's not the norm everywhere. But we're not talking about the civilized world here - in the Eastern 2/3rds of the US aggressive redneckery is absolutely fricking everywhere.

Nah not the same guy, so I'll make a point to give my perspective you little b***h. Their target wasn't newbies alone, it was car enthusiasts as a whole. Top gear would explain core concepts to you from time to time but was never afraid to get technical. Anyone could watch Top Gear and be entertained at any level but also not feel talked down to like you are completely in the dark. Of course the media has to be digestible for the general populace, you can't avoid that with content that is broadcasted like this. It's not nostalgia that drives people to say top gear is good, it's that we haven't gotten anything like it anywhere else. Donut media tends to reiterate core concepts because they assume their viewer base have the attention span of a toddler, which is true.

What exactly was your point anyways? You led with top gear being "babys first somewhat educational car program" and state that hardcore audiences weren't targeted. Despite the fact that hardcore audiences are the type of enthusiasts that would support such a show. Instead you are now saying that it's "basic, fun, and yes entertainment" which is completely different much less abrasive.

            Anonymous

Both Top Gear and Donut Media have the same problem for actual enthusiasts, and thats being too surface level. They just go about it in different ways.
There's nothing more boring to someone who already knows what they're doing than Clarkson talking the most basic shit like how "the ultra light weight of this Nissin is just SO characteristically Japanese, and really helps le corning ability" and then some shitty angled action shots of the Nig throwing it around the test track meant to impress normies who've never seen a car break traction before. Cut to the normie "audience" in their studio clapping and cheering because the director flashed the "clap" sign behind the camera.
Then they bring on some dumbfrick celebrity movie star who knows jack shit about cars. "Ok, lets see how Simon Cowell does in the Nissin!!" Hammond cracks a quippy joke, crowd laughs and claps. Cut to Simon Cowell driving on the test track. Really great car enthusiast content here, Top Gearheads!
Read: baby's first somewhat educational car program.

            >Despite the fact that hardcore audiences are the type of enthusiasts that would support such a show
This is just blatantly false. Like I said, most hardcore enthusiasts that still watch and defend this show grew up with it, or at least watched it when they were first getting into cars. That was me for the longest time too, I watched it just because I've always been watching it since the day I started getting into cars.

It wasn't really a car show. It was a social/matinee/daytime TV type show. The vast numbers of people that watched those type shows in the mid-20th century - there was just a generational change. Needed to be a device to keep Boomers from realizing they were the same as their parents - that was cars.

Idk anon, the frankenstein ambulances firing patients like a cannonball was pretty damn funny. It was just so unbelievably outlandish. To each their own, though.

    >clarkson hammond and may
    stand back for the GOAT
trio top gear was still good though, just as a semi-improvised (it was always scripted since they started doing "challenge" episodes) comedy show, but clarkson by his own admission is a terrible car journalist, may's alright though

Early top gear was extremely good. It was scripted but it didn't feel like it, they even won an award for best unscripted show and they joked about it in an episode.

However the show was more and more obviously fake and scripted, and it reached the peak with the Grand Tour, where they basically just play caricatures of themselves.

the big brain move is noticing when the show got too overly scripted and watching their solo shows instead

Which special/episode was it where they have face paint on and Hammond applies Clarkson's paint but draws a penis?

It may have been from the grand tour.
