They were 99% ready for production and had to cancel last last minute as the recession hit after they'd already made a lot of the parts. The G8 ST got shown off at the New York Auto Show and was ready for production, but as Pontiac got the axe they had to use the excess of Pontiac front clips on special edition models in Australia instead.

Pontiac beat BMW to the punch of splitting their grilles by one full year with the 1929 Pontiac 6. The first BMW with a split grille was the 1930 DA3 Wartburg.

Double wrong. That's the DA3 Wartburg which came out in 1930. It's based on the Dixi 3/15 which came out in 1927. They only built 150 of those DA3s in 1930 and 1931.

      >>swap all the new one parts onto it since it's been the same chassis for 40 fucking years

Current chassis rails are wider up front to allow V engines. They widened the front axle but left the rear the same so they get a lot of cussing because of it. I don't know why you would want modern engines anyway. However if you have real money you can swap in a new 1HZ as they still make them.

No one would buy it. The only people that make the "why don't they sell stripped out basic SUV/Trucks" argument are the people to cheap or broke to buy new vehicles to begin with. How do I know this? Because they used to offer stripped out basic shit, and people opted for higher options. Even know you can get a stripped out cloth seat vinyl floor silverado, sales are effectively zero.
If Toyota thought they could make money off a 70series in the US they'd sell it here. Why would they not? No one in the US goes shopping for a new vehicle to spend $30k on a vehicle that is outfitted like a 90s shitbox xj cherokee, they just go buy an XJ for 5 grand.

      >No one would buy it.
People on this board think "car enthusiasts" is a big money segment for automakers.
      It's not.
LULZ is not representative of the car-buying public.

Is this Land Cruiser cool? Yes, of course it is.
But the vast majority of Toyota SUV customers wouldn't even consider a "retro" styled 4x4 offroader.

The sales on the new Bronco are somewhat decent even if they are not as high as their other models. If anything that would be its main competitor in the "retro" styling market.

          Anonymous

The difference is the Bronco and Wrangler are thoroughly modern designs with retro aesthetics, whereas the LC70 is at its core the same rig that first rolled off the Aichi assembly lines in the 1980s. So it rides like (and has the safety of) an 80s utility vehicle.

Yep, and this is why the new 'Land Cruiser' (Prado) looks like a retro-influenced LC instead of the real old school one. The 70 would cost anywhere from $50-70k+ easily in the US, and for that price consoomers expect to be getting lane departure warning/lane keeping assist/adaptive cruise/emergency braking assist/carplay/blind spot monitors/rear camera with cross traffic alert and whatnot. Some of them are barely even getting automatic transmissions for the first time in nearly 20 years.
In the US it also lacks the 'lifestyle' appeal of things like the Wrangler/Bronco, there's no SWB model or a roof to come off either to make it competitive to those as well. Instead, it looks like some '90s soccer mom SUV to the average NPC.
      >tl;dr It's still a based as fuck vehicle, but most 'car shoppers' won't see it that way.

damn, that actually looks pretty comfy. even with the screen it looks like something from the mid 2000s. even the shift knob looks like the same part number from 30 years ago, in fact it probably is.

At $50-60k I absolutely would buy that for myself so long as it has a V8 or N/A I6.

      >no auto? no buy
      >no lane assist? no buy
      >no parking camera or assist? no buy
      >no remote star? no buy
      >no keyless fog? no buy
I hate how no matter where you go you have to deal with that shit, I don't like not having real keys and some thief can steal shit so much more easily (kia's and dodges), I don't like how every suv looks the same, I don't like how it does that turn off shit EVERY time I stop the car and has to be deactivated EVERY time I get on the car, I hate that if I don't use my signals the car refuses or beeps when switching lanes, i hate how it also beeps to let me know that there a car next to me like I am some type of mentally ill patient and can't see it, I hate how forced electric cars are when ICE are just the better system for the average man... IT FUCKING SUCKS how much soul they taken out of cars.

Yes, get rid of all regulation and let consumers buy what they want instead of what fucked up regulation causes the government to build.

Just like the kei trucks that some DMVs are trying to get rid of, the main competitor for these would be the shitty side by sides/UTVs. Any of them sold by a reputable company with a tiny bed are $13k at the minimum, and for that you get
    >no cab
    >sometimes not even a windshield
    >no heater
    >tiny cargo space
    >fragile suspension
