The Satanic Verses

Were the Satanic Verses actually said by Muhammad?
If not why did this book cause so much seethe?

The Verses:

Have you thought of al-Lāt and al-'Uzzá? And about the third deity, al-Manāt? [Quran 53:19–20]
Satan tempted him to utter the following line:
These are the exalted gharāniq, whose intercession is hoped for.

At the end of the chapter, the polythiests prostrate along with the Muslims.

Well muhammad said that Satan put words in his mouth when he mentioned Allah's daughters

One thing is for sure there is no definite proof that the Quran came from God.

There is nothing glorious in the Quran that makes it divine.

I'm not sure if it was God, but the Quran came from something that knew a lot more than an illiterate orphan from a pagan village could make up about the Abrahamic religions

This, he knew exactly the amount you would expect a merchant interacting with israeli tribes and Christians in Mecca and Medina to know.
He makes some pretty embarrassing errors that Christians around him point out:
Worst example is when the Quran mixes up Mary, the Mother of Jesus, with Miriam, the sister of Aaron and Moses,
        Sahih Muslim 2135:
-When I came to Najran, they (the Christians of Najran) asked me: You read" O sister of Aaron" (referring to Mary, Mother of Jesus) in the Qur'an, whereas Moses was born much before Jesus.

          >Sahih Muslim 2135
you left out the next part:
          >When I came back to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) I asked him about that, whereupon he said: The (people of the old age) used to give names (to their persons) after the names of Apostles and pious persons who had gone before them.

Can a Muslim follow the Satanic verses?

Muslims cannot follow the satanic verses, i.e. pray to polytheistic dieties.
But there are Muslims that believe that Muhammad said the satanic verse.
It actually use to be a common position among scholars, and great scholar like Ibn Taymiyyah affirmed the authenticity of the satanic verses.

There are two explanations for Muhammad saying those. He was in an extremely weak position in Mecca so he said that to buy some time for himself.
One explanation is that it was taqiya on his part but this is a problem for Sunnis since this would justify shia using taqiya. The other explanation is that Satan told him to say that thus not justifying taqiya and so you get various hadith on the subject

why would God allow His messenger to be deceived by Satan? Why would God's messenger be so vulnerable?

It's not a good book, objectively speaking. I suppose it's only famous because of the controversy it caused.

Jesus was tempted by Satan, but never actually tricked

IIRC the issue was that Muhammed couldn't tell the difference between Shaytan and Jibril. Not only that, but there's the idea that prophets are basically perfect and can't make mistakes.

Wikipedia says he insulted Khomeini at the end of the book, it was just a political dispute
