Any opinion you have on music is made meaningless when you associate it with people you like or don't like. Music consumers preoccupied with who else enjoys it aren't actually listening to the music at all, so they have nothing specific to say about whether it achieves its aims or how it could be improved.

    GBPGI > DGIO
    Hot Head > Flies
    Spikes > Black Paint
    Linda's in Custody > Warping
    Eh > The Horn Section
Hahaha > Bubbles Buried in This Jungle
    Shitshow > Trash
    Streaky > Houdini
    BB Poison > Dilemma
    Three Bedrooms > Little Richard
The Fear > Ring a Bell
    80808 > Outro
    Disappointed > Bottomless Pit

as an album I like YOTS way more than BP, BP has bangers but it doesn't really come together in a particularly memorable or strong way. I love the flow of yots, I love the instrumental interludes like The Horn Section and Outro, even Shitshow if you can count it which is such a unique and fun track.

YOTS is the best DG album and the one I listen the most. I actually can’t remember the last time I listened to any DG that is not YOTS, Steroids or NOTM

YOTS has is a beautiful mix of everything Death Grips has done over their career. The lofi atmosphere makes every track feel as grimy and dark as the cover art suggests and helps every track perfectly flow from one to another dispite the many genres it goes through. The album also works as a commentary on the legacy of the band and the effect it's had on it's listeners, explaining the constant self sampling. Yet the record doesn't take itself too seriously, it's very absurd never taking itself too seriously, hence why there is a "horn section" that's a drum solo. They made what they wanted to make, fuck the fans.

In comparison Bottomless Pit is exactly what fans wanted. Many say it's a successor to The Money Store but I'd say its a successor to the reception of TMS. That is by far DG's most popular album for it's aggressive electronic beats and insanely catchy hooks. BP feels like TMS without the soul. Everyone wanted them to make more of these kinds of songs after experimenting more and more for each following album to less popularity. I don't think BP's a bad album (Spikes and BB Poison are amazing) but it's missing the soul, like they played it safe. Very intentionally so as they put "very shallow listening" on vinyls for the record, but I want the freedom of expression that YOTS has.

TLDR: BP is the album their fans wanted them to make while YOTS is the album they wanted to make. I'm tired of typing.

Year Of The Snitch. That said, NOTM is better than both

Streaky with the super polished hi-fi production of BP would have been such a god tier track, tbh. It's still good but the lo-fi sound of it doesn't fit it as well as it does the other yots tracks

            Anonymous

Funnily enough I think that's the most hi-fi track of the album.

              Anonymous

Death Grips is Online edges it out, but yeah Streaky is probably 2nd place.

I love the lofi sound of yots, especially on tracks like The Fear, Disappointed, Linda's in Custody and Hahaha, I feel like these tracks almost sound better the shittier your speakers are, like no bass, tinny garbage and these songs still sound sick. Feels like that was by design.

      >I just don't like the style thereafter, especially adding guitars
How much further could they go with the electronic apocalypse sound they had cultivated on GOVERNMENT PLATES and NIGGAS ON THE MOON? (oh yeah ... ... ... STEROIDS)

I think the addition of a new –– dare I say "nu" –– sound palette on JENNY DEATH freshened things up a bit. Besides, you've gotta admit that 2015 was peak Death Grips either way. That time being a fan was a fucking rollercoaster. Who's bringing it like that in 2023? Machine Girl? The Garden? Please.

Does anyone know why this youtube version of Hot Head doesn't have the bassline?

Seems strange to me to have 2 different versions of the song and I have not read any comments about this even tho it is pretty glaring to me. Are DG fans musically oblivious or am I just going crazy?

it's well known, the original release has no bassline but when they released the album it had a bassline.

Interesting, thanks. Surprised they ever thought no bassline was a good idea, song sounds so hollow and unfinished without it. With it it's a modern masterpiece however.

          Anonymous

for me its the opposite, I listened to the single of Hot Head so much that the bassline ruins the song for me, it sounds goofy with it.
Hot Head is probably one of their greatest tracks. It's such an odd fit on Bottomless Pit.

            Anonymous

I just love the chorus. Knew right away it was one of the best tracks I ever heard. DG somehow just make the most extraordinary hooks that surprise you with how soulful, innovative and catchy they are.

              Anonymous

I also absolutely love the crazy drumming by Zach on it, and the fact that they're live drums too. It sounds so good, his style as a drummer comes through so well on this track. I think he has a lot of restraint in general with Death Grips as far as his role as a drummer goes, at least on the studio tracks, so its really fun to hear a studio song where he just goes all in.

Another drummer highlight track is Voila, its great in a completely different way from Hot Head, it's such a layered track when it comes to percussion, probably the closest Death Grips has ever gotten to math rock. Really highlights the production techniques of notm, that track is all percussion but the way it is textured, the way beats flow into one another and play over each other is crazy impressive, not to mention the fact that its in multiple time signatures as well.

This. The sparseness of the single version makes it way more claustrophobic and threatening, album version is cluttered with extra sounds and effects that add nothing.

BP has some very strong moments but overall just takes me back to the mid '10s when the haters used to namedrop artists who sound like Death Grips. In BP's case they would be right. It's not entirely unique.

YOTS on the other hand has some of their most impressive work as musicians and is undeniably unique. Nothing else sounds like DGIO, Hahaha or The Fear for instance. Nothing. Plus it all impressively flows together very well.

True, The Powers That B might be my favorite album of all time. Coming to terms with what's out of control in life and dealing with the hand you were dealt with is some real shit. The first half perfectly displays how confused illogical self conscious beings we are on the inside and the second shows the reactionary egotistical arrogant creatures we are on the outside. The two sound completely different from each other but combined they somehow improve the other. On top of all that every track is catchy as fuck.
