            it's harder than it looks. I tried this for a week but couldn't help myself from re-downloading all the apps I used prior and aimlessly browsing the internet. the fact that smartphones make it so easy for you to download apps and use the internet makes it harder for the user to distance himself from these things. like anon kind of eluded to previously, you shouldn't let an alcoholic keep a box of booze in his refrigerator if he's trying to curb the habit. this is essentially the idea behind the dumb phone trend. whether we are aware of it or not, the vast majority of people have genuine clinical addictions to their phones, social media, and other forms of technology.

        in the context of relationships and dating;
        numbered keypads have the benefit of making you text very briefly and preferring a phone call. these are two chad habits to nurture in yourself. texting too much is beta behavior and makes you seem needy with little going on, and initiating a phone call signifies confidence and is a much more comfortable way to have a conversation. you have the persons full attention and feedback is more sincere.

          Sending a text containing perfect grammar and punctuation.

          can have a subconscious effect on the receiver. the overly grammatical message signifies trying to impress someone and being well conditioned, a well behaved rule follower. while the brief one that follows no rules implies someone who doesnt care what your opinion is of them, they feel themselves as a prize, high confidence, has a more badboy streak, etc etc.

      Maps are overrated. Get a road atlas and high resolution local maps. After you use these for a bit you'll just internalize the road graph and not really have to worry when you're navigating. It's so much better than turn by turn navigation.

                Are you this blissfully unaware that there is more things you can accomplish with a smartphone than just browsing the internet and communications, of only which one thing a dumb phone is capable of? Dumb phones are not secure either keep in mind and they're more locked down than any AOSP or Linux mobile OS out there, that alone inherently makes it less private and secure because you have no ability to audit the system.
                If you want to be truly private and secure the only option is to have no phone, but the best compromise is using a private and secure android rom like GrapheneOS, or if you are willing to lose on some comforts, a Linux phone

                I'm aware there are many other things a smartphone can be used for, none of which are relevant to the question on privacy.
                I'm not talking about secret agents being compromised here, just your average person making calls and not using their phone for all their shit, how is that worse than using a single device for your entire life on a platform that gets compromised on a regular basis?

              All of the design and engineering that goes into smartphones is to convince you to do this though. If you can overcome it then congrats, you're better than the rest of us.

    Entirely depends on your position. If I knew how to live on my own and homestead or camp without the need of technology or money I would, but I don't know how I would do this.

    I don't need a phone and I don't want one, same case with a computer. Because of the situation I'm stuck with having these things. I need a phone for work and for GPS, and I need it because I have to pay rent and check my bank.

      Excuses excuses. If you actually wanted to get rid of your phone you would treat it as a work tool and leave it at work. But instead of doing that, you're using work as an excuse to keep using a smartphone as your personal phone.

    I used a motorolla razr for a while. Texting was a bit of a pain, you forget how back the only numbered keyboards are, but everything else was great.

    Unfortunately, I got a work phone that I needed to be on my at all time, which kind of defeated the purpose of having the Razr in the first place. So I ended up going back to smartphones.

      I never had one of those so can’t judge, but I never fully stopped missing a physical keyboard from a flip phone.

    Old phones are x100 times better than any new "featureless" phones, which has PLENTY of room for espionage devices now that everything is smaller

    Japan’s the only country with 4g and 5G flip phones. Plus the telecom services are tied to the phone so good luck lol
