How common is it really? Do you think most couples are secretly like Jack and Babette?

Depends what you mean by being like them I guess. Do I believe most couples/people use materialism and consumerist desire to distract themselves from suffering and the fact that they will one day die? Absolutely! Not sure if I believe that most people are aware of this fear the same way that people eventually become in the novel though.
What do you think prevents most people from coming to the realisation that befalls J & B?
Primarily the intensity and the dosage of the distractions, which is constantly increasing. The noise in the 80's is nothing compared to tiktok, of, etc. Before I started meditating I couldn't even take a shit without scrolling for distractions.
isnt that what putin has? phobia of tha nato?
You jest, but yes. Putin's current war is Murray's advice played out on a vast scale. By killing others, Putin believes he is granting himself an extended lease on life.
Dier gang
Don DeLillo claims that there is very little of himself in his characters...I'm not sure I believe him. Only a thanatophobe would create a character like Jack Gladney.
Same concept but in a industrial region in the 60s in Italy.
Wrong board
i just finished the critical edition intro last night about to get into the text itself today. i really hope it's not just "consumerism bad!" that just feels like such a shallow take. great literature really needs to have insights deeper than a teenager's. like has anyone written a novel about people who read classic novels in an effort to avoid death and give their lives meaning? the closest i can think of as a rebourse. i just find dunking on other people lame. oh, or how about a book that shows the joys of consuming stuff in an prosperous abundant society? consumerism good! would actually be a novel take. i'm still gonna read white noise, it's probably good, but so far if it's just b***hing that other people are spending money on things the author doesn't approve of, i have doubts.
Why don’t you read it? It talks about how the marketplace has been replaced by the monoculture of supermarkets, which is obviously a comment on the replacement of consumption and trade as mere functions of wider political economy. It also comments on the trivialisation of knowledge and the hyperspecialisation of knowledge into cult status academia, which is less to do with consumerism but more to do with the structure of the university under neoliberalism. So, in a way, it is all about the postmodern condition, which is why you should read Lyotard.
as my post said i will begin reading the text today. i just find complaining that you buy groceries in a supermarket instead of a bodega an utterly banal and rather questionable "insight" not worthy of great literature.
You are stupid
you are a chick who browses tiktok on the toilet.
There are no new insights, only new aesthetics and approaches to the eternal insights.
there was a vigorous trade in consumables in the ancient mediterranean but for some reason no classical authors bothered to pen whiney texts critiquing how people shopped for olive oil.
You don’t know what consumerism is.
Consoomerism is buying stuff for the mere sake of buying stuff, you don’t NEED all that cheap Chinese crap and yet you buy it to fill the void left by Liberalism’s merciless uprooting of meaning, family, friendship, community, religion, art and culture.
Trade back in the day was driven by need, people needed that olive oil for cooking and buying it wasn’t an end in itself.
I love reading this quote with the most innocent supraverbal communication. Like it's a rabbit who has no motivation for feeling superiority over another human so he just says
Nice comment but I see you're lacking a definition!
Yes critique of consoomption is almost as old as lit itself. You can find critique of materialist memetic desire in the bible in the bible, herodotus, pliny etc. etc.
I think people that believe such horseshit take frauds like Ernest Becker at face value
Cope. Deep down you know Freud and Becker are right, this makes you afraid, which in turn makes you angry, describing their work as 'horseshit'
God I hated this book. Dying is such a common fear, it doesn't really require that fancy term.
~~*freud*~~ and ~~*becker*~~ are garbage, too.
