No other man on record has ever so thoroughly united all the virtues both of the ruler and of the private man. In no other man on record were so many virtues disfigured by so little alloy. A saint without superstition, a scholar without ostentation, a warrior all whose wars were fought in the defence of his country, a conqueror whose laurels were never stained by cruelty, a prince never cast down by adversity, never lifted up to insolence in the day of triumph – there is no other name in history to compare with his.

A man like him who becomes king is a once in a thousand years event.

I always wondered why he was never made a saint by either Catholics or Anglicans. He seems more deserving of it than some of the other Englishmen that were canonised.

Maybe because he declared Odin as his direct ancestor.

He thought Woden was just a man though, not a god.

Pretty reasonable of them to discern that IE spiritual tradition was in many ways a form of ancestor worship.

          that's badass

He btfo'd the Danes, forever ensuring the destruction of Europe.

sounds like something a son of Odin would do, makes sense

He wanted to translate the whole Bible into the common man's tongue (rather than Latin) for study by the people, and was known to have translated the ten commandments, and sections of the Psalms into the Anglo-Saxon language of the day.
