Another technology that could have done something if Sony's retarded IP lawyers didn't lock it down and ask for exorbitant licensing fees from anyone who wanted to use it.
It would have been really great if it had been used in literally anything else in addition to the psp. But no. nothing, no platform was allowed to support it, there weren't even usb plugin drives for it. How could anybody ever use it?
The point was to make something cheap yet proprietary and locked down so retards couldn't copy it from their computer
I don't think the complex encryption of the discs has ever been cracked - because there was no need to, you could access the unencrypted content from the PSP OS
lmao no, spinning trash like this was a waste of materials, drained battery and was incredibly fragile.
games on memory stick wasted much less battery and loaded faster than games on umd.
it was a worthless invention, it would have been a better idea to just use memory stick or to use microsd instead as they're much more reliable and require much less energy to use.
it cost as much to manufacture a memory stick that could hold two games as it cost to manufacture the disk drive. the discs cost next to nothing to produce.
>it cost as much to manufacture a memory stick that could hold two games as it cost to manufacture the disk drive
Then the big flash revolution happened and the disc drive cost as much to make as fifty memory cards.
umd was just a hangover from sony's attempts at a better casette tape, they cannibalized minidisc technology to make them, and unfortunately for them, flash memory caught up
What's even more incredible than the Bible Black OVAs being released on UMD is Bible Black Portable PG
Remember interactive DVD games like how Dragon's Lair got a DVD release? Some porn VNs got an UMD release like that including Bible Black.
Imagine playing this on the bus.
When i mentioned Bible Black i was talking about the VN, didn't even know the OVA got UMD releases as well. When i was a kid i had a DVD player that came with two controllers and a bootleg NES emulator, since everyone uses their consoles to watch Blu-ray they should start doing this again, a Blu-ray release of a live-action/anime adaptation of a old game coming with the game in it would make buying it over pirating worth it

Isnt it jut a cut down dvd.
The root cause of their problems lie here:

Not when the psp was released, only after it was nearly eol memory cards got cheap.
he said the entire disc drive, not a disc

utterly wrong
>utterly
lol i get it
>Laughably limited storage space
Even CDs are superior and those have gone out the door long time ago
Explain, I wanna laugh too..
Best thing to get released for this was Bible Black btw

yes it did and after that we got technology 2.0 and it kept on getting better and we have yet to peak.
alternative future where bulky PDAs and videodiscs are still used
>technology peaked with "thing from my childhood"
No!
>universal
Always seemed like a gimmick to me
Wasn't a gimmick when games were 1.6GB while memory cards were at best 1GB and cost a ton of money
No it didn't, asshole!
