Yeah, she did. There's a whole section about how he decided to skip school to take Edith to the park merry-go-round to rape her

Ah wow I didn’t catch that, I guess that’s why she had no emotions at his funeral. Thank you anon

i think she had an emotional response shortly after, like burning his stuff or something?
it also explains why she was so protective and possessive of their daughter

Yeah you’re definitely right damn I really did feel bad for Grace though her life went to shit and she became a drunk. Her future would’ve been better if she had followed Stoners footsteps

    >wtf was wrong with Edith?
It's been years since I read this but if I remember correctly she was a young attractive woman entering her prime and was greatly looking forward to traveling in Europe and getting banged by chads but her parents thwarted her plans and compelled her to marry the devastatingly boring and uncharismatic Stoner so she basically went nuts and took her rage out on stoner and her child.

I don't understand why she couldn't take her European trip and then return to marry.
Was it the expectation at the time that she would most definitely take in multiple lovers there with donkey-esque emissions?

As I remember, her parents weren't that stoked on Stoner. My interpretation was that Edith got diddled and saw Stoner as an escape from her fricked up situation. Similar to how Grace later gets knocked up to escape her crazy mother.

Stoner deserves some of the blame too. When Stoner proposed, he promised her that he would take her to Europe himself, but he never delivered. I think he turned out to be a big disappointment to Edith, and on his deathbed he admits to himself that he could have loved her better.

What's up with this diddling accusation? I didn't catch any hint of this when I was reading.

I don't see diddling either but maybe she was generally not too happy with her parents and at first hoped that Stoner would be a better person to live with and he just wasn't.
But the fact of the matter is that Stoner didn't exactly push back on anything. He was spineless. He just sat and took it, no matter what she did. I'm not saying he should have beaten her or anything but when your wife actively tries to ruin your relationship with your daughter there's your queue to speak with her plainly and say that won't happen. But he just fricking let her ruin his relationship with the only person in the world who should have loved him unconditionally.

I don't know if she actually thought Stoner would be better, she seemed pretty reluctant about getting married.

I think this is what happened. Stoner was there, he was making some money, he was a safety net and she was going to marry eventually because the book takes place after WW1 and well, that's what people did. The book talks, after all, about a profoundly normal man who is neither remarkably good nor remarkably bad. He is kind of a coward but also stands up for what he believes as long as he is won't get ass-fricked for doing so. That's the reason why he sounds bolder at the end of the book: he has tenure and does not want to lose against Lomax.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read it but I think it’s strongly implied, like her reaction after her father’s death

It wasn't explicit, but when her father dies she returns to her home and burns all of his gifts and letters and radically changes her appearance. She doesn't show any emotion at his funeral.
Whatever happened, it was very clear that Edith felt liberated by her father's death.

Hating your dad doesn't mean he diddled you.

Stoner is the most accurate depiction of depersonalization I've ever read. The scenes of him just drifting around comatose without any sense of awareness are agonizingly beautiful. I'll be rereading this book for the rest of my life.

do you think lomax had some kind of relationship with edith? if no, then where was she getting all the gossip about katherine?

Im pretty fuzzy on the specifics tbh. I don't see Lomax gossiping with Edith. Word gets around lots of ways. Man, reminiscing about this book depresses me. Stoner should have died in the trenches instead of his college friend. It really bugs me how he let his wife ruin his relationship with his daughter and take over the office he liked so much.
