I see many reasons every day, through my suspicion and wariness, not to trust people or to believe that any of them have good intentions. But I try to remember this, when I need reassurance.
I was crying so hard and I just couldn't stop. It felt like my heart was being torn out. A lady came up to me, and she asked, can I give you a hug? And I let her. And then she said as she hugged me, "I don't know what's wrong, but whatever it is, it's going to be okay."
We may be afraid of love, we may not want it, but in little ways -- in a smile, in a hug, in the kindness of a stranger - sometimes you need to let yourself feel it.
