i searched for this image some time ago just to have a desktop image to meditate on. and after some time i noticed it was edited. look closely towards the center.. there is a perfect circle where the texture of the snow is different from the rest of the photograph.. like it seems obviously edited in some way and that is likely the most critical area of all.. like there is something there on the one side of the mountains.
Are you talking about the really big circle with its center at the south pole, or the small white circle with its center towards africa? The large one is an artifact of compositing different satellite mapping systems. If you look carefully in your image, or look in google earth, you'll see that the circle is lower resolution. This is because the higher res satellites in 'polar' orbits aren't inclined 90 degrees and so don't pass over the pole proper, they pass over a point that circles around the pole. There's apparently imagery from some lower res satellite that does though. The pie slice effect is due to compositing near the geometric singularity at the pole. ie the passes overlap more and more the closer you get until at the pole itself ALL the satellite passes overlap. This looks odd. I like google earth because it gives imagery credit per tile if you zoom in.
The small white circle has a pie slice effect associated with it as well, but I don't know what the deal is off the top of my head.
