It's 316 stainless steel so it doesn't have zinc, which lowers the melting point of steel. It can withstand a house fire, but you're probably right in saying it wouldn't survive a plane crashing and exploding into my home.

When people say this, which wallet is the BTC stored on? The private keys still reference a specific address on the blockchain. I don't get how you can have a paper wallet without it either being on a hardware wallet, a software wallet, or a CEX wallet. Can someone answer this

You are simply right and you understand well. You are right that a paper only wallet doesn't solve the "making and signing transactions safely" part. Hardware wallets are necessary, that's why Ledger is a billion dollar company, simple as that

            Anonymous

That doesn't answer my question. How can you generate a wallet without using a cex, dex, or hardware wallet? You can't just write some words down on paper and have that be your wallet address, it has to be a reference to an actual wallet on the blockchain.

              Anonymous

              Ah!
Yeah you lack a fundamental information:
Generating a wallet is ALWAYS just picking a random number between 2^01 and 2^256. That's all.

So you can create your wallets offline, no issue. Hardware wallets like Ledger have a TRNG system to generate this random seed. Only important point: for it to be random.

All of crypto is built on top of that

I did not know this. Interesting. Imagine doing this and then by some freak statistical accident, creating an existing wallet. I know that there is virtually no chance you could possibly do this, but the chance is higher than zero.

I don't why people have so much trouble understand this, when it is a simple thing.

Crypto is always on the block chain. The seed+passphrase is just the information you use to sign a transaction proving you authorize it. The key never has to be online. Its just that the math to sign things is very involved and requires a computer, but it could be an entirely off line computer (or done by hand but it takes days).

Maybe the problem is that the term hardware "wallet" is a misnomer. The hardware wallet doesn't store anything that doesn't exist outside the wallet. The hardware "wallet" is just a way to use the seed+passphrase to sign transactions without exposing the seed to any computer or online.

You're wallet is still controlled by the seed+passphrase which is just information. It can be written down offline (which is safest) or stored in your email (not safe) or memorized. You'll just need that information to sign transactions, that's it. And a hardware "wallet" is just a way to do it without exposing your seed to a computer.

If you just receive crypto, only hold, never make transactions, then you never have to use your seed at all other than to generate an address one time. Hardware wallets are for using your crypto, signing transactions.

I'm a brainlet and I was using a HW wallet for the convenience. I just hodl and plan on cashing out years from now. Would this work:

          1. build a cheap PC without a network card, install something like linux mint on it.
          2. Follow the guide on MEW for offline wallets:https://help.myetherwallet.com/en/articles/6512619-using-mew-offline-current-mew-version-6
          3. store my seed phrase on paper somewhere safe.

If the PC I built is damaged or destroyed, I still have my seed phrase written down like any other HW wallet.

The other option was doing something like gnosis safe with my existing ledger and go the multisig route but I don't know shit about gnosis.

Aside from jokes. I tried it. Doesn't work for me.
Elements are to harsh, need protection. Besides that, unless you have real proven skill you could move to a place like lapland or alaska and go from there. Else its just a constant harrasment by police. People were actually nice unless you're in the city.

You shouldn't put so much value on money in the first place thinking it makes/breaks people. If it wasn't money, it'd be land. If it isn't land it is some other resource. Some people want control and others to be controlled. It isn't money, as ironically jesus said. It's the love for. It's greed and those emotions will manifest themselves with or without money, trough some other form.

        exactly right
they will come kick your door down about anything because evil exists in that form
the love of the self. pride vs love
lead vs gold. life vs death. black vs. white. good vs bad. its time and the arena our souls are given characteristic in
ultimately time is a filter for good and bad

bitcoin is a weird digital gold, it doesn't get used. If we make cash truly digital, then Monero should get used. Or efficient L1s with stablecoins (algo, poly)

this is why it may not be bitcoin but its a proxy to work out anything they didnt think of
it certainly wont be monero though. i think that guy is controlled but what do i know
either way people who love control will never give you a place to hide

Imagine stressing over something you're not even important enough to be targeted by. Why are Americans like this?

      Anonymous

The only reason you're not being targeted is because you're a needle in a haystack so you're hidden by the crowd and the effort/time it takes to complete the task of targeting each individual crypto holder repetitively. But with advancements in AI that won't matter soon. They'll just have the AI rug everyone at one time.

Get a ThinkPad, install Linux = there's your hardware wallet.

how do you find a thinkpad with no wifi card? do you buy one and take it to a shop and tell them to yoink the wireless adapters from the PCIe and mobo?

Just get an old Dell Optiplex or something. Most of those old office grade PCs don't have built in WiFi cards and you can find them super cheap. Install Linux and a wallet, disconnect the Ethernet cable, generate a new wallet, and write down your seed. Done.

what wallet to install? Thinking of something like this as mentioned

Ledger wallets are.... wallets. You don't keep your life savings in a wallet, you keep enough for convenience for transactions.

For fucks sake, buy some brass strips, buy a metal letter embosser, and make your own cold storage wallet.
