so are these a meme or what?

so are these a meme or what? do they actually cut down on dust in a room or are they just snake oil for rich white people?

I tried the box fan + air filter thing and it was annoyingly loud.

in principle they can work, but fashionable consumer implementations generally don't.

Any otherwise innocuous fans in the room that are caked with dust? If so, then yeah, that should work. Won't be night & day the moment you turn on the switch, but I don't see why it wouldn't help, unless you always keep the windows open and there's a constant cross-wind.

I do wonder about the phone in the photo. Is it a required component, or just a convenience option?

I see buttons on the top, but I suspect full functionality is requiring the app

my room is extremely dusty, everything gets covered with a fine coat within a couple days. I really don't know what it could be but I'm tired of it. I also tore out my carpet several months ago and it didn't seem to help much.

There's probably a bunch of dust buildup clogging your air vents. You can hire someone to have them cleaned professionally.

I got one and it seems to have cut down on my coughing a little bit. I also thoroughly dusted the whole room including all surfaces, walls, and ceiling around the same time so it could potentially be attributed to that or placebo effect rather than the filter.

I think the app is only required to get air quality readings from the sensor. The main function is just a fan with an air filter and doesn't require an app.

Have you thoroughly dusted all surfaces in the room including vents and under/behind everything, and your fan blades? Do you have a computer in your room? Take it outside to blow it out rather than knocking the dust back into the air. What are you using to dust? Vacuum? Dry duster? Wet rag? Does your vacuum have a HEPA filter?

They grossly overstate their capabilities. I have five Coway Airmega 400Ses for my 1500 square foot apartment and even then it is technically not enough. They claim it is good for 1560 square feet, but that is on high speed which is obnoxiously loud, on medium speed (50%) it would only be good for 780 square feet. But also their ratings are for 2 air changes per hour, whereas ASHRAE says homes/offices should have 5 per hour, so it is really only good for 312 square feet on medium speed. Their ratings also assume that your home is a giant box which no home is except for maybe a studio apartment. The filters cost about $90 each and have to be replaced every 6 months on medium speed. So with electricity uses you're looking at about $1000 a year to run them. I also paid on average about $500 each for them, it is not a cheap endeavor at all.

I'll only be filtering my bedroom, which is about 150 ft2. I keep my door closed most of the day.

my other concern was electricity cost, it needs to be running all day to make a difference I'm assuming so I'm not sure how much it'll come out to in power.

also are you trying to filter dust or VOCs. although the coways have charcoal filters they never seemed to do much for me for removing chemical odors. you would probably need something like an IQAir which is an entirely different price tier if you have a VOC problem

Bruh they pull next to no electricity it's a fan and a series of filters. You can pay half as much for third party filters and they work the same. Two of my winix units use maybe $4 of electricity a year running 24.7. and maybe another $9 each for replacement filters. You are mentally retarded lmfao

          >You can pay half as much for third party filters and they work the same
they wont you poor, there is a reason why things cost more and why you cant afford them

Bruh they pull next to no electricity it's a fan and a series of filters. You can pay half as much for third party filters and they work the same. Two of my winix units use maybe $4 of electricity a year running 24.7. and maybe another $9 each for replacement filters. You are mentally retarded lmfao

you really are this retarded are you, let me hold your hand like a prepubescent child

          0.065 kWh / 2 (for medium speed) = 0.0325 kWh
          0.0325 kWh * 720 (per month) = 23.4 kWh
          23.4 kWh * $0.14 per kWh = $3.27 per month in electricity
$3.27 per month * 12 months = $39.31 in electrical costs per year
$39.31 + ($90 * 2 * 1.1) for filters and tax = 248.31 per year per air filter to run. So I guess I was wrong, it costs me more like $1250 per year.

          > Two of my winix units use maybe $4 of electricity a year
then they're moving so little air to do absolutely nothing, or you're in capable of doing basic addition and multiplication

          >mogs your setup

I have 5 cockatiels in a cage in a room it helped reduce the bird dander/dust somewhat but the filter get clogged very fast so you have to clean it every day. Still without any air movement you are kinda fucked every day more will build up until you need to do a deep clean.
So yes it does help but for extreme cases you need a bigger one.

They're just a weak vacuum with an air filter.
Of course it will collect airborne dust. Will it cut down on the dust in the room? Yes, if you limit the amount of dust that can enter the room as well. But if more dust is coming in than it collects, you'll still be net positive.
