Yugoslavia was too powerful for a non aligned nation. Had to be disbanded simple as.

But was it still in 1999 or did they fear a reunification would happen one day?

I'd say waging war for medieval mythology and religious supremacism in the modern age would put anyone in close vicinity on edge

Who cares if it's a regional conflict? At least in the case of Kuwait you could argue that it was about securing access to oil. And the Cold War was also over, so what was there to win/lose?

      >medieval mythology and religious supremacism
I hate westoids so much it's unreal. That would probably more aptly describe the Iraq war (supremacy of Judaism) than anything Serbia has done

lol, otac mi je bio u ratu na kordunu u pobjednickoj vojsci :^), nevertheless, you lost 4 wars in a span of 10 years, wars you should not have started, maybe kosovo I understand but bosnia, croatia, slovenia were a disgrace, you should rather look to the future tbh

for one, kosovo is very much in the strategic interests of the west, it's in the heart of balkans, perfect for the usa to establish a protectorate like kosovo

Isn't it enough to already have Greece and Turkey and also they were winning over Slovenia and Croatia? Neither do the Balkans have a worthy amount of resources, nor are they in the interest field of great powers, they haven't been since WW1.

well today there is no great fear of any conflict in the balkans, even the flame war kosovo is just political rambles, the balkans is firmly in nato hands so russia is effectively cut off from the mediterranean in any real conflict but in the 90s when most balkan states weren't in nato, the problem in kosovo was ramped up by usa in order to gain a foothold under their direct control which was illegal according to all international law, and since 2008 that shit has been an american fortress, it's unconquerable by any amount of serbian attempts to their dismay

Russia was on better terms with the US in the 90s than any other time since at least WW2 and things seemed to only get better, what would have been the need to cut Russia of from the Mediterranean? Also now they have Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and even Montenegro, making Kosovo obsolete, so why not just give the Serbs that one and thereby improve the stability of the region and antagonize Serbia less?

                >Russia was on better terms with the US in the 90s
only superficially, the countries have hated each other since at least the end of the 19th century, and after the usa abandoned isolationism in favor of the rainbow doctrine of encircling russia, the differences became to great to overcome which shows today in ukraine, generally I think, living in the balkans that we will be exempt from the eventual ww3 and the biggest battles will be fought in the middle east and far east, thank god for once geopolitics is on our side

also, there is almost 2 million albozergs living there, now imagine giving them voting rights, they would literally elect the serbian government, I mean kosovo was lost in late ottoman times, the serbs had a chance of ethnically cleansing the region before ww2 in the first yugoslavia but the process was going too slow until it became a big nono to remove your enemies from your coveted regions, it would be impossible for serbia to hold that region effectively even without nato intervention

I don't think they're a boogeyman so much as a bit of a pariah. Boogeyman seems to imply they inspire fear.

The west barely thinks about Serbia at all. It is one sided Serb butthurt coping that keeps anything related to this issue alive.

Nobody in the West has thought anything about Serbia after the year 2000 except for Hillary Clinton going there and the "remove kebab" and Tupac memes
