KDE if you're used to Windows.
GNOME if you're used to Mac, drinking frappuccinnos and getting railed in the ass.

gnome is not very like a mac tbh, they both have a dock but other than that the ux and flow is kinf of different
can argue with the others tho, i love getting pegged by my autist gf while drinking my tripplemacci soiccino

gnome with dash to panel and desktop icons is pretty close to windows too
both those addons are also just installable packages in the debian repos so you can just sudo apt install them

Even with a dozen extensions, gnome still has the worst file manager of all DEs

maybe, i guess i haven't used kde enough to really be able to compare
gnome works well enough for me, and there's no telemetry to worry about like in kde

what opt-out telemetry is in kde?

              Anonymous

there's no opt out, as far as i know
i just don't like the possibility and i'd prefer to not have that on my machine at all

Try them each out for yourself with a Live USB and go with whichever feels more comfortable.

KDE if you like crashes and ugly outdated looking UIs. Gnome otherwise.

Gnome if you want a slow bloated machine. KDE otherwise

KDE for desktops and Gnome for laptops

Neither. Try Cinnamon, XFCE, or LXDE.

KDE if you're used to Windows. GNOME if you're used to MacOS.
Xfce if you're not a retard.

KDE is far superior to Gnome. They used Valve's money to improve their DE where as Gnome used Redhat's money to hire a shaman and more black people.

Use them both for a week each and make the decision yourself.
    Xfce is also nice.

Use KDE/Wayland for a modern system that works as you would expect it to (just be aware of some intended restrictions due to the nature of Wayland, but programs are coming around for this to not be a problem)
i've used Gnome for half a year or so and honestly it was a bad experience, they have an opinionated idea of how you use your desktop and i didn't like it at all, many settings you would expect to be there seem to be missing (for the sake of 'simplifying' the experience) or getting scraped or are not working, i'm sure Gnome was great back in the day but it's pretty bad now

      >many settings you would expect to be there seem to be missing
As a gnome user I agree with this statement. Yes there are extensions, but frankly some of those extensions should just be part of the DE. The alphabetical order of your apps for example. (alphabetical app grid) The ability to disable the screen saver & auto suspend (Caffine)

I've been using gnome 4 on debian 12, with an extension called V-shell that I used to bring back some of the things I liked about gnome 3 like vertical workspaces. It's pretty nice, no complaints so far.

    easy as:
    You want features -> KDE
You don't want features -> Gnome

i just used gnome cuz that's the popular and default, and i threw in those arc menus/panels extension. i only have 1 tasbar and it's on the bottom, like windows.

i don't think kde is necessary if you're "used to windows" like some people say.

Can someone explain Wayland vs Xorg to me and which is better? I chose Gnome because I was told Wayland is better than Xorg from a security and privacy perspective and KDE with Wayland doesn't work on my laptop. Did I do the wrong thing?
