Scholasticism is the Answer to the Atheist/Agnostic epidemic

What else would convert many atheists and agnostics other than scholasticism? They left religion because they thought it was irrational. Catholic scholasticism and lots of debates over intellectual issues in doctrine can bring these people back.

Religion is based on something that's irrational by definition. You lost the game before it even began.

Religion can be rational and intellectual. See the doctors of the church.

The doctors of the Church clearly separated what can be known through reason from what is only accesible through faith. And in all religions what matters the most is the contents of revelation.

Truth is, theology has never been able to solve the following riddle: if faith can be demonstrated through reason, then it is pointless; if it cannot, then it is arbitrary.

Of believing in your god were reasonable, reason would be sufficient to prove it’s real. That’s how that works.

Even if we granted that there is an unmoved mover/uncaused cause/necessary being and so on, I still don't see how could you possibly demonstrate that said God is the Christian God.

      Anonymous

You can’t, because the Christian God is a israeli pagan deity that was never a supreme being to begin with.

Exactly. It's pretty funny to see tradcaths today complaining about progressive christians interpreting the Bible metaphorically to fit the new scientific and moral consensus, when their beloved Aquinas did the same with the God of the Old Testament in order to harmonize it with his abstract metaphysical idea of God.

I think you could arguably still have ChristianityTM or something like it, without all the Hebrew bullshit attached. Theosis, the divine virtues/deadly sins, punishment/reward in the afterlife and the death/rebirth of the world is something MOST religions share.

Well, if someone comes to believe in a Creator, the next step can be presenting the case for the Resurrection, as in this well-made video:

Or in one of the many books on the subject, such as:

Green, Was Jesus Who He Said He Was?

      McDowell, More Than a Carpenter

Or a scholarly tome like N.T. Wright, The Resurrection of the Son of God.

I'm sorry, but Hume's argument against miracles preemptively BTFO's any attempt at presenting historical evidence for the resurrection.

Hell, even the Bible admits that the story of the Gospels is supossed to sound moronic to any normal, rational person:

        >For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Literally anything else? Atheists and agnostics want rationalism and scholasticism. They want academic rigor, and this is missing in much of the American faith. I've seen atheists convert to Catholicism based on the scholasticism and intellectual factor.

Most people become atheist because they want to be scholastic, scientific, and intellectual.

most so-called atheists are just disillusioned with the church. it's an expression of dryness of spirit, not irrationality

Is it really so hard to believe that atheists don’t believe in ancient gods from Iron Age mythology? Do you really think that’s far fetched?
If I was disillusioned with the church I would find another church.

You post about atheists as a christian without hatred. Now pay attention, in your own thread, most likely, and all over Oyish a thousand of christian posts full of malice are being posted about atheists. Not gonna lie, me personally, I'm agnostic, and literally anything anyone tell me can't change that, I mean it. But the thing is, we don't have to gate eachother.
But for sone reason, some people want to keep the war alive.

Christian doctrine tells them to spread Christianity, and their beliefs are wrong. The ancient near eastern god Yahweh is not actually real.
They are inherently a source of division and conflict.

This is true but that’s why they continue this conflagration. If they were like almost every other religion I’ve interacted with that didn’t push it on others, we wouldn’t have this problem.

Christianity is irrational. Your doctors can't explain many of the doctrines they preach.

Honestly OP you may be right. In my anecdotal experience the only thing about religion that I find valuable or enticing (as an atheist) is rigorous scholastic study of scriptural works and context-providing historical and anthropological texts - and I find that most religious institutions in the modern day deliberately ignore or undermine this aspect.
