Was it really though? Indulgences were basically a tax on the rich. If you were poor wouldn't priests just forgive your sins after saying three hail marys or whatever? If you were rich however you needed to actually give up some of your worldly wealth to be forgiven because you could give it up ... just as the bible says. The rich men of israel who could not go through the eye of the needle would not follow Jesus after he told them to give up their wealth. If one is rich they must be willing to give up their wealth to be forgiven for their sins.
Hundreds of thousands were killed in this war which brought great misery and suffering to Europe. All this started because of the selling of indulgences.
People were quite fed up with corruption and double-standards of the Roman Catholic Church. Kings, princes and rulers of the different regions wanted to break from the heavy shackles of the Roman Catholic Church. They found the financial demands made by the Church too burdensome.
Father Luther, a good, honest and obviously ethical priest objected to these practices. This is what any good priest would do, or aught to have done in Luther’s place.
>church holds that masses said on someone's behalf can reduce their time in purgatory
>rich merchants and nobles fund monasteries on the condition that the monks hold lots of masses on the donor's behalf
do you see the problem here?
What's the problem?
I assume that he means that this concept inherently favors the rich and invites a concept that one can actually buy conscience
Because he wanted to be the pope by without putting in the work
Martin Luther put him self through lots of strife that could have been aboided if he kept his mouth shut. Questioning his character is dishonest.
Because he cared about his religion maybe?
>Why did he do it?
Germanic blood. He simply can't help it.
I like Muntzer and the early Anabaptists more as characters than luther. Living a Catholic-lite life instead of risking it all to either completely overhaul society through the Spirit of God or completely drop out from it to live the New Testament as closely as possible seems like a cowardly compromise. Luther cucking out might have made his name last longer, but at the cost of his message being watered down by each generation to the point that the German Lutherans (and global mainline and most evangelical churches) are more akin to peptalks/concert venues than spiritual houses for people who commune with God
Luther was the original shitposter, he used the new printing press to mass publish memes shit talking the pope.
