The raw rasterization performance boost of 30% is so fricking depressing. They moved from samshart 8nm to the absolute best node in the world and it's ONLY 30% better with even the architectural improvements of the last 5 years of working on this product. This is extremely disappointing. The biggest gains are in ray tracing which no one uses.

Video games are obsolete. We only play RTX™ DLSS™ tech demos and stare at reflections all day.
Raytracing is more important than raster performance now.
The real issue is the pricing and the rebranding of the cards. Frick Jensen.
yeah i cannot wait to play only ray traced game in 5 years that is 20 years old, quake 2, hopefully it will run over 60fps , if not i will turn on interpolation and play with 2000ms
Don't forget about Minecraft RTX, which looks worse than literally any community-made shader for Java Edition
The difference is huge and undeniable, when done right.
In time it will simply be part of graphics and you won't even think about it.
that shitty title lmao
metro exodus came out without gay tracing
This specific version is RT-only, and it shows. Watch the video if you care to learn anything. What do you think happened to PhysX, by the way?
yeah, but the ghosting artifacts from denoising are quite apparent in many current titles. algorithmic improvements are being made all the time though, and each generation traces faster and faster, so I agree with you in the long run.
Now that the current gen consoles support it, we should see it gain in popularity a lot faster.
As long as you're not one of those morons who thinks PhysX "failed"
>As long as you're not one of those morons who thinks PhysX "failed"
It's just one of many physics engines. Of course it didn't fail, it just joined the ranks of Havok, Bullet, etc and ran well on the CPU like it could have from the start if NVIDIA didn't use it to try and cripple AMD performance.
>when done right
A single game has done it right and it already runs very well on both the 3000 series and AMD. Not really an argument for upgrading.
>In time
Yes, in 20 years. Not a consideration today.
>What do you think happened to PhysX
NVIDIA abandoned GPU acceleration and open sourced it because it ran well on the CPU once they bothered to compile it with SSE/AVX optimizations.
I never claimed you should buy a 4000 series, either. The opposite actually.
>it will simply be part of graphics
so basically you're saying devs will be so lazy they'll offload lighting to my hardware to save money. they can go pound sand.
precomputed lighting is just a crutch for slow hardware
Not to save money, but because it's simply better. Real-time raytracing has been the holy grail of graphics for decades. Of course it's the long-term goal, and it will eventually replace all the simpler approximations we've been using all these years.
This is the part that kills me. Ray tracing is the dumber, more trivial way to do light. Rasterizing tricks were honed over decades and Nvidia thinks users and devs will want to just dump it so they can play with a worse lighting engine at .1-.3x the framerate. lmao nvidia.
Yes, they will, because raytracing is superior you moron. Clever approximations will only get you so far. This had to happen at some point.
>Clever approximations will only get you so far
RTX IS an approximation. The real thing used in movies is still light years away.
It's a closer approximation to reality. You can bring up bidirectional pathtracers and I can bring up spectral renderers and we can keep at it until you want to directly simulate quantum interactions between particles and shit.
>RTX IS an approximation
the RTX hardware does one thing, it tests rays against triangles. this is not approximated in any way, and is done exactly the same way as in movie renderers.
the tricks boil down to stuff like shadow mapping (eww), baked lighting (doing the same computation but as a pre process and you can't react to dynamic things) and screen space shit which is inherently limited in quality (reflections fade away when the reflected stuff goes offscreen). it's interesting for sure, but there's no reason to keep holding on to it.
