As a teenager I was like this with hardcore music, only to realize much later in adulthood that a lot of that music was trash, but I did actually still like a lot of it. I think it takes a certain cynical attitude to be driven into liking quirky music, and then the music takes over kinda. It's the same thing as your dad listening to Motley Crue though. That band isn't actually good, it's just what was party at the time.

I really did like it when I heard it many years ago, it seems to make sense in a certain way of you’re on the right mood for it. Though it’s too tiresome to listen to all the time and I prefer his other works so maybe you’re right.
If you’re simple minded enough to have your mind blown by the concept of “almost good sounding songs made to be deliberately off-sounding and inaccessible” then yeah, hearing that album has to hit you hard. For most people though, that isn’t shocking or interesting, just annoying and contrived.
