Redpill me on the Ranger XLT, is this a good truck to use that is not super expensive to maintain?

I was wondering because quite a few peps are fans of Toyota trucks but they have gone up in price a lot.

A few anons on this board drive them and I don't recall them having anything negative to say. Super ugly though. I'd get a base f150 instead

I really like mine so far. The pic you posted looks like an EU model and they're very different from NA ones, but mine has over 50k mi on it and is still in basically perfect mechanical condition. I have very few complaints and most of them are minor things that would be resolved by buying a higher-spec model, but my budget didn't stretch to getting every option I wanted and getting an FX4 was more important to me than getting one with leather seats, LED headlights, push button start, etc.

I find the push button start annoying, I'd have been fine with a key that never needs batteries.
I had some luck with fake leather seat covers for $250 on Amazon and I know there are probably higher end ones you can customize like clazzio, and obviously there has to be some sort of aftermarket LED head light, or even a replacement for cheap. All those extras from the dealership are over priced for what they are anyways.

I didn't necessarily want any of that stuff anyway, just saying it was the available alternative - when I was shopping it was a choice between grandpa-spec trucks with all of the comfort/convenience stuff but none of the performance or utility options, or the one I went with that's basically fleet spec on the inside but has FX4, tow package, factory bedliner, optional 110v outlet, etc. That was an easy choice for me, especially because it's really not badly equipped, has dual zone climate, parking sensors, blind spot warning, a decent screen with carplay/android, LED lighting everywhere except the headlights, etc. The only higher-end features I'd really want are the leather steering wheel, the LED headlights, and the heated seats (more for the heated mirrors that come with them) but it's all stuff I can life without or add through the aftermarket if I really want to, none of it's cheap though.

I checked out an XLT before I bought my Lariat and completely hated the ignition cylinder more than anything else I've ever driven. I thought parts were missing. That's how sloppy it was. I guess there are aftermarket fixes but my lawn mower key cylinder felt better put together.

Yeah, but people around here act like Fords and especially Ecoboosts will go to shit within 30k miles or whatever. Just saying my Ranger's lived a pretty hard life, the first 46k were as a rental, and it's managed to take it with nothing worse than a few dings and scratches.

The Ranger is fine. The Taco is overrated. It used to be good and then the frames rotted in half and now Toyota is no better or worse than anything else but people remember when they were still good and line up to spend stupid money on them new or used. I'd buy a Ranger, Colorado or Frontier before the Taco. Taco drivinig position is pants-on-head moronic.

They are fine. A lot of Americans complain about the interior being clunky, which it kind of is, being a global platform and largely carryover from the last gen. Any half ton (or even the new Colorado) will have a nicer interior by default. You can get one nicely optioned for cheap, though. Last time I built a 2023 model I optioned up an XLT tremor for $48k, and added almost every option. Seems pretty reasonable especially compared to a Bronco Sasquatch (what i was pricing this ranger against) and an equivalent F150 (which went for about $60k). It bothers me that you cant get a 6ft bed with the Tremor trim.
Its not gonna be quite as comparable to a Bronco off road because of the poor F->R weight distribution, and its high strung 4 cylinder wont be good towing compared to any half ton. In peak trim with a trans cooler a ranger is rated for 7k towing which is good enough for a boat or small camper but not much else. Fuel efficiency is fine for a truck but not as good as the maverick. Reliability wise they are fine, just kind of cheaply constructed so you may have little snags here and there. They are about as big as half ton trucks from 25 years ago, they are not at all comparable to the old school Rangers except in name.
Overall its a good alternative if you cant decide between a Bronco and a F150, or if you think F150s are overpriced

It's not much wider or longer than my 87 Ranger X-cab. It's just taller.
The tailgate on my 87 is 1" shorter than my 21.

Track/project car on an open trailer, SxS, dirbikes, etc., which imo are the realistic things somebody with a truck like this is likely to tow.

Yeah and thats totally reasonable, although if you’re towing long distances I wouldn’t push the envelope too much. Ranger is fine for most circumstances as long as youre under the capacity.

It may be a similar car dimension wise but the new ranger feels much more upscale than the previous version. Its much less a work truck than its predecessor especially in XLT or lariat trim. The modern Maverick is a better comparison to the original ranger imo
