I highly recommend mythology for a start. I worked at a university with this fabulous horrible painting no one wanted in my office. I love Camus. I had a wonderful french on the left english on the right version of the stranger. It was so perfect. The doctor helps plague victims because he is a doctor. not for any moral / ethical or philosophical reasons. He is just a practical man doing what needs to be done. He knows that he cannot win against death but he continues anyway - embracing the absurdity. he is essentially a self insert for Camus' absurdist philosophy at its most high minded. If you know Camus then you will know why he doesn't kill himself.
BUT it's never mentioned. His fear. His avoidance. Techniques. I read it twice with that in mind. If you can give me an example of him having any question about it do tell. It may have been lost in the translation.
