Project Car for beginner

hi, is it stupid to offer to buy my neighbors 90s ranger as a way to learn how to wrench? its been sitting for at least a decade and i have absolutely no idea what its issues are internally. id offer them $750 for it if its a manual.

i think its a 94 or 95. i dont know anything about the engine or drivetrain.

      >ran when parked
Has potential to be a great truck for cheap.
Also has potential to be a giant piece of shit that should be crushed.
      >Why was it parked?
      >What engine?
      >What cab configuration?
      >How many miles?

I would put more money and effort into a supercab 4x4 than a standard cab 2wd.

the father was a hoarder and they have a at least five other vehicles rotting in the driveway. ill get same more information next time i talk to the son, but if i had to guess its most likely because they didnt want to fix whatever went wrong and just moved onto the next car. its the supercab of that era which is just an extended cab.

no, that is a great idea. will bring it up if its worth it.

$750 is too much. He'd at most get $200 for scrap. Offer $300. You're practically doing him a favor by taking it off his hands.

you are right. ill lowball and see where he is willing to go. it wasnt his truck and i dont see him having any attachments to it.

Ya I hate using the term supercab but it's what ford called their extended cab and there will be confusion no matter which term I use.

There are common issues with those trucks but they're overall simply designed.
Typically it's difficult to outright kill them. So chances are whatever is wrong can be fixed relatively easily.

thanks. ill look into the service bulletins once i get some more information about it.

Just to give you an idea of the drivetrain options, here's the axle codes.
All rangers are not created equal.
So if you do check it out take a pic of the vin plate on the door jam

fyi, the 4cyl pinto engine seems to be neglect-proof
and the manual transmission is simple and overbuilt for that truck
      🙂

how could one car's cursed reputation have such unfathomably based mechanical wonders?

      What’s the visual difference between a 4wd ranger and a 2wd

        Anonymous

The front diff on the 4wd is a good start. On the interior it'll have a range selector knob on the left side of the radio, too.

Front diff or (if its buried in grass) locking hub in center of front wheels.

That year (if he's correct on 94/95) is a manual transfer case, no electronic knob.

OP I can give you the rundown the truck if you get some more information (like the vin tag).
And there's weird things to look for on the feont diff if it's a 4x4.

dont lowball so bad he gets boomer offended. $500 was a fair price for a beater about 5-10 years ago offer him $500, or like $400 lowest
only offer $300 and below if they start talking about how shitty it is.

Black person a beater can at least run. This has been a lawn ornament for the last decade. It's barely worth more than scrap.

I'm the ranger owner that literally had to cut down trees to pull a project 1995 ranger ouy of a forest that had been sitting for 10 years.
New battery, 3 bucks in gas and it started and idled.

          >It's barely worth more than scrap.

Im in the humid south (no salt).
My forest ranger still has paint on the underside of the cab and bed.

Body appears to be straight. Glass looks good, but unless you can actually START it, with maybe a battery/starting fluid/oil and verify what shape the motor and trans are in, $750 might be too high.

This thread is a complete waste of time.

manual transmission last much longer than auto transmission and gets better mpgs on the rangers. so it does make a difference.

It's a good car to wrench for a beginner. Idk if you plan on dumping money into it, but I certainly wouldn't for a old ranger that's been rotting for 10 years. For something in that tier find an S10, idk if that's still a thing though. Go for it, just watch your bills at O'Reilly and remember what the end result will be.
