Try listening to PT's first few albums, I personally think their early psychedelic / spacey phase was the best. Everything started to go downhill after Stupid Dream, but I do quite like their newest album. Seeing them live in NYC last year was one of the greatest things I've ever experienced in my life.

Wilson is clearly a clever guy, some of his remasters are fantastic (e.g. Tales for Topographic Oceans for the most part, although im not the biggest fan of how he cleaned up wakeman's harsher synth tones), but he can't write a song to save his life. If you really want to hear prog with modern production just listen to his gentle giant or yes remasters, you'll probably realize that you should have just been doing that all along.

      Anonymous

Wilson can absolutely write a song...if it's prog-tinged pop. Even the "metal" stuff is just that but with distorted guitar textures. But a song like Prodigal is perfectly well written.

Gentle Giant poster here. Thanks for the recs. Stranger by the minute is pretty good, almost britpop-like. Lips of Ashes is also a solid impression of the acoustic bits in Yes songs. Everything else sounds weirdly Christian Rock-ish. It's like prog Breaking Benjamin. Or sometimes even Creed. I do appreciate the yes and GG influenced vocal harmonies that are on most of these but ultimately I just think Steve's writing style isn't for me. I also think the guitar and drum compositions are pretty lazy - again, weirdly generic and almost christian rock sounding. I get that Gavin Harrison is supposed to be an amazing drummer, but I find he rarely does anything interesting to me. Even if it's not to my taste though, I'll still always respect Porcupine Tree for getting redditors and alt rock kids into prog - hopefully it becomes a gateway drug to the truth.

For those in the thread who haven't heard it, check this Gentle Giant tune out - Wilson was definitely a big fan of it.

Grace for Drowning and The Raven are more conventional prog albums, and they're both way better than most PT albums. Insurgentes isn't even prog to me, it's more like dark ambient drone rock.
