All Pictish inscriptions from 500/600AD-1000AD are Gaelic
All names recorded are Gaelic
And historically no evidence can be supplied to oppose it
Many principal settlements and geographical features of the region bear names of Pictish origin, including:
Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire. Meaning "mouth of the River Don" (cf. Welsh aber, "estuary, confluence").[39]
Cupar, Fife. Meaning "confluence" (cf. Welsh cymer).[40][6]
Keith, Banffshire. Meaning "forest" (cf. Welsh coed).[39]
Kirkcaldy, Fife. Meaning "place of the hard fort" from caer, "fort" and caled, "hard".[43]
Perth, Perthshire. Meaning "wood, grove" (cf. Welsh perth).[40]
Yell, Shetland. Meaning "unfruitful land" (cf. Welsh iâl).[44]
Several Pictish elements occur multiple times in the region.[40] This table lists selected instances according to the Welsh equivalent.[39][40][42][43]

None of them could be called Welsh realistically other than Aberdeen and Kircaldy. And Cathair is already attested in Gaelic anyway. Aberdeen is also easily explainable as a native Gaelic term.
I could go on but this all ignores the main point that historically the position is untenable.
The annals record that Kenneth McAlpine the King of Dal Riada conquered the Picts after which Gaelic became the prestige language in Pictland and the Pictish population were gaelicised. What do you mean by “not historically tenable”?
No contemporary annal records this. Even the 4 masters who compiled a massive summary of Irish annals don't find any record of this. Its quite strange how this myth only appears 150-200 years after MacAlpin's death. That's like me writing something about Churchill and pretending its a contemporary source because we live in the same era.
