0% overrated. Deserved all the praise he got as a singer and songwriter. One of the best voices of all time.

He really was underrated as a guitar player. He came up with very creative and nice parts for songs. Played shit like "Rusty Cage" and sang at the same time.

what exactly is overrated about him?

He's just average or above-average across the board yet people bow down to him as one of the all-time greats.

elton john is average. chris cornell was a one in a million singer

Grunge never appealed to me, in fact I can't stand the genre - but Jesus fucking christ, you'd have to be deaf not to appreciate his voice.

This, OP is a homosexual. Also Cornell was head and shoulders above most of his peers, you can't seriously tell me that Cobain or Eddie Cheddar were better, that puts him in the top 50% of the Big Four of grunge (I know that's not an official thing but whatever)

I don't really think anybody from the grunge era was a top-tier singer. They all had their styles and brought something to the table and that's it.

The whole point of grunge was that it was pretty ordinary guys making music

Layne was the closest but he fucked himself over with drugs and lost his voice early. He had great power and tone, maybe not as much range, but I like the sound of Layne's voice over Chris when both were in their prime.

yeah, Layne is my favorite, but Chris is the better singer.

I always hated their vocal harmonies. It's like every single word they sing has that vocal harmony part.
It's kinda annoying because I've never been able to get into their music because of that constant vocal harmony I can't stand hearing.

I think you're dumb and weird for thinking that, but either way listen to Mad Season.

Yeah Layne at his peak was fucking untouchable. He still sounded good on Mad Season but you could tell his voice was already a lot thinner and had less power. He started to smoke crack from like 94 onwards, I think that had a lot to do with his demise both physically and vocally.

Vedder, Cobain and Staley are all much better singers than Cornell
Cornell has a bad voice. he did what he could with it, but it's an unpleasant sounding voice and only works on certain types of songs.
i didn't even know he was actually considered a "great singer" until after he died. that shocked more than his actual death, i think.

One of my favourite performances of his. Incredible from first to last note.

the best use of Cornell's voice was for backing vocals on Alice Cooper's Stolen Prayer. their voices went great together.
as a lead singer tho, i never cared all that much for Cornell

This is a prickish thing to say, but Cornell never said anything. He sang a lot of songs, and was a great singer, but he never had ideas. Soundgarden is for turning off your mind. This gal understands He was an A+ backup singer.

he changed the way he sang after breakup of soundgarden a little bit. i prefer his singing 1998 and before, but of course, he had amazing songs after.

im not sure why, i know he had problems with his vocal chords/throat; and iirc even had a surgery or something. so he probably had to make changes to avoid strain. also he wen to rehab - and this is after he previously in late 80's to 90s shit talking other bands that had drug issues and they were different yada yada.

still my fav singer. didnt like audioslave too much, but that is most millennials experience with him

His throat got fucked up in the early 2000's. That's one reason why he changed his voice a lot from his younger days. He was still great afterwards, just different.

In the 90s everyone said he could break glass with his singing. That was his big meme thing whatever that means. I also wasn't impressed by his voice.

I always thought he overdid his singing and don't like his virtuoso style for the kind of music he was involved in. He was less expressive in favor of technical skill and I don't care to hear that shit in non art rock rock music

      >his virtuoso style for the kind of music

what does this even mean. this is pretty far from the manner of 90% of his catalog

        technical and showy
