I would like to know more on how the cult of the Theotokos started in the Orthodox world.
I thought that the point of the resurrection was that we did not need intercession apart from that provided by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
I asked my priest about this and he said “well, wouldn’t you do something if your mother asked you?”
I know that the Theotokos inspired many saints, including Seraphim of Sarov, and even the creation of the Mount Athos community, so I am open to learning about her role in our salvation. Still, I feel uncomfortable with how much we venerate her (every liturgy and she has several major feasts dedicated to her). She is a very special lady and deserves our love and respect, but I am worried that there might be something nefarious hidden underneath this cult.
