Yeah but if you're a man and you're old enough to use the Internet, you've probably been told to "be a man" before. And maybe you've told other men to "be men". So clearly, even the most traditional men believe that "man" is something that one can be, that someone can not be a man and then through their actions, become a man. I have no doubt that that didn't think that far ahead though, this is traditional men we're talking about.

If traditional men didn't believe this then why would they freak out so much over their sons not being manly enough? Is someone a man if they have a dick, therefore nothing any man does can make them less of a man and the idea of "manning up" is meaningless? Or is a man something that someone can aspire to be, justifying the idea that trans men are as much men as girly boys who were forced to play sports?

"man" and "woman" are roles. the world is, in fact, a stage. people conflate certain traits with biology. some of that is warranted, some isn't. "manning up" is something anyone can do because the main thrust of that idiom hasn't got much to do with biology besides the word "man". it sounds funny to say it to a woman, but the idea's the same. dorian here fooled me because she was playing the role of incredibly flamboyant gay man. i was like oh that's one of those types, ok sure, fine. not for me, but fine. not the biological parts, but the social peacocking parts.

Exactly, you understand my point very well. It would require great ego to think that the way I see the world is how it truly is. The overall point is that a lot of men tend to hold these contradictory views, that masculinity is both innate and unchangeable but also, it's possible to be "less of a man". Obviously that doesn't make sense, that's the point.

You don't actually know how I define men so you can't know if your point is actually sinking in or if it's laughable because of how clear it is that you read the Wikipedia article on philosophy and didn't stop to learn how to apply it.
