Opinion on Jaco?

i am sort of new to jaco, but just about everything ive heard from him i enjoy thoroughly. i heard him on heavy weather just about 2 months ago and ive been listening to a few songs from his debut album. i've only really listened to portrait of tracy and continuum off that album but those songs are my favorite from him. just wanted to see everyones opinion on him 😛

You never do this when discovering a new artist? I often hear one good song and then very slowly ease into their others because I’m worried the other stuff won’t be as good and will spoil the artist for me if I access it too quickly

Finish the album. He's inarguably the best bassist in jazz.

How does LULZ keep getting dumber and dumber with takes? How is it even possible? Every single time I think the bar is low enough, it lowers more.

          >How does LULZ keep getting dumber and dumber with takes? How is it even possible? Every single time I think the bar is low enough, it lowers more.

Expressing disagreement without explanation you reasoning is a clinically reliable indicator of low IQ.

Forcing yourself to listen to music that you don’t like until it “clicks” is not a display of any kind of intelligence or refinement. You resorted to this as a proxy identity after first failing to develop any actual impressive traits such expertise or artistic talent.

            >Expressing disagreement without explanation
            OK. Here's your explanation:
If you think listening to one song that's slightly worse will "spoil" your opinion of EVERYTHING THEY EVER MADE then you're either incredibly picky or (more likely) you're trolling.
One singular song should not be able to do that for you.
And the guy didn't say 'forcing' or not liking it. He literally is avoiding it because of a hypothetical slight chance it might not be good. That's idiotic.

I don't think he's overrated but I don't really like his tone or most of the tracks he plays on if that makes sense.

Great player technically and great command of music theory, but fundamentally just another wanking instrumentalist who never actually created important or memorable music. No I don’t care if that fusion band was influential on other obscure fusion bands. No I don’t care if he did some collab with Joni Mitchell that even Joni Mitchell fans don’t listen to.

He was also a wannabe tough guy homosexual who confused his musical prowess for fighting ability and got his shit wrecked in the end

Is he really the “best bassist of all time” just because he could shred some jazzy notes?

What is the purpose of bass and bass guitar? To 1) provide the low end and 2) hold down the rhythm of the song. In jazz this is generally fine with walking basslines, arpeggiating each chord of s progression

What does Jaco do instead? He plays fast, shredding high notes without any emphasis on keeping rhythm, and focuses primarily on melody. He essentially played the bass guitar like one would play lead guitar

Was he skilled? Absolutely. Was he “THE BEST BASS PLAYER EVER”? Well since he didn’t actually perform the role of a bass player at all, the answer has to be objectively no.

        >without any emphasis on keeping rhythm
        Blatantly incorrect.
        >He essentially played the bass guitar like one would play lead guitar
Most of his playing wouldn't sound nearly as good on a standard guitar.
No instrument is required to stick to ONE specific role permanently. It's nice to see people experimenting it. Implying it should only ever play basic low end lines is idiotic and reinforcing the exact stereotype people make fun of bassists for.

Sure, and while we’re at it, let’s start using guitars as the rhythm section and drums as the melody section.

There are no rules for music, but instruments absolutely have an intended role, and if they do not play this role then they become redundant or obsolete, much like Jaco’s playing. That’s why he never created lasting or impactful music. Nobody ever cared about it outside of bass players and jazz homosexuals

Sure. I'm not opposed to that. I've certainly heard albums do weirder.
Timpani, timbales, vibraphone and marimba exist for a reason.
            >That’s why he never created lasting or impactful music
            Once again just outright incorrect.

He transcended what being a "bassist" meant.

There is no "best" in anything musical, it's all subjective. Fact is he took an extremely dull instrument and mastered it to the point where he could make the thing sound like an entire band.

His techniques (specifically, the creative use of harmonics and percussion) were never really heard before, but are still being utilized today.

Dude was a pioneer and died penniless, like most other "greatest of all time" artists, just to have retards like you shit on him because "he doesn't do what I like so he's bad."

And I'm not even a fan of jazz. But you have to respect his talent.

I'd never heard of him or his music and I watched a documentary. Really liked it and everyone was sucking him off in the most extreme ways so I checked him out. Good bassist, but very underwhelming music.
