I was in crypto back in 2013-14, lost a lot of money with few hacks but was still able to cash out something decent in 2018 and buy a shitty apartment without any debt. Still own some crypto to this day, bullish on btc and eth

Was around for this thread myself.
Was the biggest meme thread of the era and constantly bumped.
Back then it was mostly literal schizos and lolberts. It really wasn't so clear that any of this would work out, even from a technological perspective.
Around a year before this post someone pulled off an exploit and mined a block with billions(or something, it was an overflow iirc) of BTC as the output.
99% of people who think they would have held BTC through all the failures and scams if they were around from before are delusional.
Plus the real way to make it was buying alts over the years to really compound your money. LTC in 2012, XRP in 2013, XMR in 2014, ETH in 2015 etc. You basically had a new BTC every year.

        > 99% of people who think they would have held BTC through all the failures and scams if they were around from before are delusional.

That’s the cope, and a rare accurate one. Saying “Ughh WHY DIDN’T I BUY BITCOIN IN 2010” is pointless, since there’s a very good chance you would’ve kept them in Mt. Gox or any number of failed exchanges. Plus, think of all the times you were financially desperate the past few years. Can you really say you wouldn’t have liquidated your funny digital money at any point between now and then?

Don’t feel bad about missing Bitcoin. Feel bad about witnessing Bitcoin’s rises and falls and not learning the lessons from it and applying them to all crypto from now on (Keep coins off exchanges, consider money that you put in “spent” money that you no longer have access to irl, don’t swing trade, and never sell)

My roommate told me about it amidst the occupy Wall Street uprising back in 2010 and I lost several hundred Bitcoin that at ATHs would have been world several tens of millions of dollars. I want to cry every time I think about it. I think I had something like 300ish if memory serves right.

10 bitcoin would have been like 180 bucks when this guy made the post so 180 dollars in your "beer fund" turning into 295,000 (or 95,000 in 2011 dollars) would be fucking amazing.

Satoshi if he's alive doesn't appear to have sold any.
A few people who would have gotten huge stacks early probably did just by gradually selling some of their stack off over time.
Roger Ver, Mircea(died, probably over 100k BTC lost forever. He claimed to have a million BTC but was also often full of shit), Winklevii all huge whales for sure. Easy to just sell off a bit over time if you have a 6 figure BTC stack and are already comfortably wealthy and believe in Bitcoin long term. Much harder if you're poor and all of a sudden 99% of your net worth ends up in something that could have been banned by the gov.
Even in 2011 congress was talking about BTC and it was on mainstream news. Chuck Schumer in particular was on it back then due to Silk Road.

There was never any guarantee that he would want to cash in at some point. Only faith that 700k-1m BTC would not be sold.

I'm trying to remember how this went, but I think it was atlas who posted that? And the whole meme of this post was that he literally sold like the bottom or something in 2011/2012. He might have needed the money or something.
Tons and tons of those stories from back then.
The #2 guy after Satoshi who used to run bitcointalk before theymos was named sirius. He was the first guy to port Satoshi's Bitcoin client to Linux, and he was one of the earliest big sellers. Sold massive amounts for less than a dollar.

And the guy who sold eth at 14 because he thought it'd go to 10 and then it went to 100 and he still hadn't bought back in back in june 2017 or whatever.

And the guy from 2021 who said he had 100 eth when it was worth about 10k but he sold it because he needed the money.

And that's why you don't go all in or all out.
