Are T480 laptops actually decent or is it just such a cult following? Looking grab an older laptop since my shit out and don't wanna spend a bunch

I have a T480 I got for $180+yuropoor tax. Pretty comfy; usb-c charging, 4 physical cores, 8GB RAM and its RAM is upgradeable to 64GB. Battery quality might vary.
I have a 490 for work and it seems fine but only able to have 12gb of ram since it was made during the ram shortage...
Thinkpad T530 was the last decent thinkpad, its no use buying anything lenovo that has appeared since then
This was 10 years ago.
So T480 is crap, stay away from it.
Buy maybe DELL or something?
If you can't afford a proper high end or mid end desktop/laptop from 2020+ then sure go for a older thinkpad. They are pure shit nowadays imo since everything is so bloated including browsers and it makes them feel terrible to use but if you can't afford anything better it is what it is.
This is my fear. Not keeping up with the growing trend of unoptimized programs. I heard the upgradability is the best/last of it's kind but curious about the CPU keeping up
Just don't have 500 tabs open and you'll be fine, I had an X230 up until this year for general purpose browsing, coding, etc and that was perfectly fine on an 11 year old 2c/4t i7 with 8GB RAM.
I wouldn't touch an old """refurbished""" laptop in a million years, even if it meant I could spend a hot weekend locked in my bedroom with an Italian supermodel.
What's wrong with refurbished?
you don't know what the fuck is under the hood unless you take everything apart
maybe I am just a schizo lol
not maybe
>maybe I am just a schizo lol
no just retarded
if it's been refurbished it means if failed at least once, and if something failed it could do it again soon
Not really, off lease laptops gets refurbished too.
>if it's been refurbished it means if failed at least once
How could you possibly feel this strong about something so false?
doesnt refurbished mean "SSD failed, so Windows installation got broken, so user returned it to store"
OR
"screen got broken, now its unusable, ser returned laptop to store"
In either case the broken part is replaced so it's fine now.
doing basic cleaning and repasting is enough to give any used laptop refurbished status, fucking retard
If you don't care about playing any games from this side of 2004 on your laptop, any old ass Thinkpad will do for your casual day to day LULZ lurking, spreadsheeting, email sending, and coding.
t. posting from an X200 running Xubuntu
T480 has the TB FW issue, be careful buying used
nobody uses fucking thunderbolt
What's decent under 500 USD?
I use a T470s with dualcore i7
runs fine on Windows 11 @ 4k resolution. Plays 4k@ 60 fps, plays HDR.
I should mention you might not get as good performance if you have terrible optimization in your pc settings. If you are retarded then just get RevisionOS maybe (custom windows iso)
also look for dell latitudes and hp elitebooks, you could get 10th gen intel core models for cheap
Which dells are worth checking for/staying away from? And specifically latitudes?
It's pretty much everything I need in a laptop. It's not a work horse, but I have my desktop for that.
just a cult
p50 is a much better investment if you're on a budget
similar cpu power despite being 2 gens older, considerably better dgpu, and several times better modularity (something shills praises so much about t480)
also one extremely important detail the cult never tell you about:
t480 is already several years old, meaning you won't find batteries in pristine condition
replacing both batteries with legit oem ones will cost you more than the t480 itself
so be careful about t480 cultists shilling you into the le battery bridge meme
>tear apart existing battery
>replace cells with good fresh cells
It's all 18650s at the end of the day.
cells with good fresh cells
This is a lot harder then 6 words would let on.
>Up to 3 drives (two M.2 SSD and one HDD)
>64GB max 2133MHz DDR4, four DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets
Oh shit this is actually sexy as fuck, why is this model unpopular around LULZ?
>T480 is old now
Man I'm shitposting from a T440 and another one upstairs runs the media center. 480 has usb-c charging I think, sounds great.
i think a good laptop but t430, t420, x220, x230 are better.
just buy t480 if its very good price
Your list has a better keyboard. But that's it. Everything else is worse.
Do they still make the spillproof thinkpads? I remember seeing gifs but browsing the website I don't see it mentioned anywhere....why isn't that more of a thing everywhere seriously.
cheap ass companies
Idk, i'm running a w530 at home. The battery life is shit, so is the track pad, but I got the quad core i7 model with a 1080p screen. Any little side project I work on (usually js frameworks) it does just fine. The speakers don't get as loud as modern ones. You can swap the cd tray for a spare hdd tray. All in all I like Thinkpads. I'd try the 480, but make sure you can get a decent battery if possible.
>W530 has very shitty speakers
>Battery is actually super in W530 but laptop itself spends it terribly fast
>You can get long battery life in W530 by putting in dualcore CPU and disabling Nvidia GPU and then using Windows 7, I got 5 hour usage
>In Windows 10 its not possible to get more than 2 hours of battery usage, in Linux is about 2.5 hours at tops
I still use my t450 i bought brand new to replace my t410. 12gb ram and an i5, it’s perfectly fine. I don’t play games though
Thinking about getting a p16 but haven’t felt too compelled really
Windows 10 support is ending in 2025, so keep that in mind. If you're going to get something older, run Linux on it.
why would this matter?
does windows 10 stop working after 2025 or what?
Windows 10 may very well stop working as Microsoft controls it, not you
Stop falling for microsoft fud
They're going to cut support and that's it, same thing happened to previous OS
There are people using Win11 on 4th gen Intels just fine
Microsoft's stance on this matter is pretty much: "If it works, then good for you, keep using it, but if something breaks and bricks your system, you're not entitled to get support from us."
Windows 10 IoT support lasts until 2035
They're fine, but you're buying something that may only last you a couple of years. It's no different from buying a used car. In some (or a lot of) cases it makes sense.
Be realistic if you need something to tinker with/upgrade/repair. If you're not that kind of person and you don't see yourself using it for more than a few years anyway, just buy whatever goypad you think looks nice. You won't know the difference. Every company is aping Applel design travesties and anti-features anyway to cater to the lowest common denominator of nonwhite morons.
If you're buying an old laptop it doesn't just have to be a thinkpad. I bought a dell precision with a quad core i7 and quadro for like 120. 60$ worth of upgrades later (ssd and 32gb) and i got a quality laptop that knocks most peoples desktops out of the park. great looking screen too
what model?
For me it's still my T420.
I can afford a better laptop but no one has made one unfortunately.
T430 is better if you get a model which fits T420 keyboard no problem, not all motherboards will work with it
Why is it better? It's simple: Ivy Bridge CPU just is better
Bough a refurb thinkpad t450 for my mom and 1.5 years later it made a pop sound and shut off. Now it just starts pops and boot loops with no image. Shame because the batteries seemed genuine because it would get about 6-8 hours on a charge. Should I just buy another t450 barebones and switch everything over?
>T480
>old
Sent from my X220.
Still getting updates than a fucking 2018 samshit android
i suggest searching github for a win10 ent ltsc IOT tutorial if you're gonna run windows.
or tiny10
If you live in most first world and second world countries you can currently get better laptops with 10 gen intel. Still T480 is pretty good, its the og T series.
Just beware of T14 series which you can grab pretty cheap. Cooling for it is just not adequate for dedicated graphics card model
how about T14 with intel only as GPU, is it usable
