Black powder works, and ammo is not a problem, any old ball bearings or whatever will do. Of course, lead shot works best, so if you can get that, great, but it's not a requirement.

In all honesty, this is probably key. If you are fighting against opponents with just various melee weapons then being able to create distance and strike quickly while also being mobile is best.
People will form gangs. You need to be able to separate groups and fight them solo as much as possible.

Certain power tools can be converted into ball bearing throwers too. A small angle-grinder with the right cupping and feed mechanism would spray metal around like an uzi. All good for pushing back an attack. Then anything sharp to make a kill if you need to. Make one of those long medieval spears. Back it up with a mace or hatchet if the attacker gets inside the spear's reach. Nogs and white nutters are only a challenge when they're full of drugs, which they won't have if shtf. Most of them will be strung out and making stupid mistakes.

Black powder revolvers are fine. See if you can find an 1858 clone that has a steel frame, as brass tends to stretch over time. Keep in mind that black powder is going to smoke up a room or area like crazy, and is fairly bright at night, meaning it will ruin your night vision.
The 1858 generally also has a better safety (the notches between the nipples) than most colts, and is capable of reloading theoretically. It also is generally a much stronger design.
Another thing to keep in mind is to find a loading that works well for you, as cap and ball revolvers tend to shift POI quite dramatically depending on things like bullet weight, bullet shape, powder type, and powder amount.
When trying to decide what kind of weapon you should have, try to remember the golden rule of what people who could choose chose at the time. When cowboys defended their homes, did they use bows and arrows? When men using bows and war clubs fought them, who won that war?
Additionally, a hidden advantage of black powder over smokeless is that it simply isn't that loud. Your ears will ring in an enclosed space, but it won't be the hour of reduced hearing you would get with a modern firearm without earpro.
You also have the option of purchasing a conversion cylinder for use with cartridges, but this is likely illegal in your area.

You need to measure that shit, buddy. Powder measures are cheap, so, there really isn't an excuse.
You need to measure your powder for each shot. They make measures, and some people even use old brass from other guns. It doesn't have to be super precise unless you are going for genuine accuracy. However, if you fill your gun to the top with powder, you run the risk of damaging or even KBing the gun with certain models.
They make powder measures as well that quickly and reliably give you an exact measurement of powder without having to worry too much.
There is an entire manual of arms regarding cap and ball revolvers, such as greasing or patching the cylinder in a manner that will prevent a chain fire.
The caps are also sensitive and may get stuck in the gun during firing, leading to a jam. There is a special way to fire cap and ball revolvers to minimize this. Use your safety.
The guns also get gummed up and rust without proper maintenance extremely quickly. They can be finicky little things.
However, a repeating firearm is much better than a single shot crossbow or some other weapon most of the time. If you run out of shots, have a large knife of some kind, this was the practice of the people who had to use them in combat.
Or if you're fancy, you can make nitrated paper cartridges
You can get away with cigarette rolling papers. Just make sure you taper the ends and that they are sized correctly. Made the mistake once of using a slightly oversized dowel and none of my cartridges would fit lol.

They do make those powder horns, yes.
However, and do not think I am simply trying to make an excuse for the lack of firepower in a cap and ball revolver, if you are in a combat scenario where you need 60 or so shots, you are probably already dead. The gun may jam up after firing so many times without cleaning if you have a tightly crafted piece.
However, you run into a similar issue with bows, as carrying sixty arrows or bolts is a bit difficult, and getting them back proves even more difficult. Unless you have a plan to keep hundreds of arrows in your home, I wouldn't entertain the idea of keeping the enemy at bay with bows.
However, outside of sustained firefights, it is much cheaper and easier to simply store several hundred bullets, a few kilos of powder, and several hundred caps.

Interesting, but seems finicky. Personally I would rather have 12 (relatively) high power shots ready to go than however many reloads that pistol can manage.
I would like to point out though that a flintlock can provide a bit more longevity than caps if needed, provided you have enough flint. They are however much less reliable and firing them is a bit strange as there is a slight delay between the pull of the trigger and the recoil of the gun.

Correct. However, while not difficult, it is a bit finicky. You may try storing them on a belt or in a coat pocket. Do not carry them with other things in that pocket, as the caps are sensitive and will go off if impacted with enough force.
You can also use felt wadding or some other type of thick grease that won't melt in outdoor temperatures. They make special grease for this purpose.

People vastly underestimate bows, just because modern battlefields moved on doesn't mean they aren't deadly weapons against unarmored opponents. With the advantage of reusable and easily craftable ammo. Like a gun they have the 'loaded spring' effect where you can deter someone from approaching you just from your weapon threat.
You'll have to run away from a huge mob but honestly not even a LMG can give you great odds against an armed horde.

The process for creating a bolt with the proper weight and that is properly straightened is more in depth than you realize. There is a reason that fletchers had jobs in the medieval era.
Also, you can make your own ammunition for a cap and ball revolver with a bit of practice if you are in an apocalyptic scenario. You need a lead mold. You can make your own black powder if you have time and a bit of knowhow. Not as long as it would take to season wood and straighten a bolt mind you. You can also make your own caps out of aluminum cans and matches, though these are not as reliable as one would hope.

Obviously for this eventuality I would take a gun if I could, a black powder revolver would definitely be good for this specific situation, or a shortsword and steel buckler if not. Worst case is they all have modern guns and you don't, but in that situation you're probably dead with anything, including black powder.
Yes bows have disadvantages, but are still a deadly weapon with some opposite advantages to black powder. Like not giving away your position and not making any light, and being makeable with only a knife as I said. Plenty of people have fed themselves for life with bows and killed hordes of invaders.
A team of archers sniping can destroy a larger force, make patrols disappear, do pretty much anything tactically that a rifleman can do. To use black powder you'd have to be very close and very confident in your weapon advantage. I'd still take black powder if possible but don't forget the bow.

With a little practice you can even feed yourself just by throwing rocks at pheasants and rabbits, and defend yourself very well against all other melee weapons with a stick.
A sling is also a very valuable thing to have too. A spear can be made with a broken shard of glass as well.
My friend, I am not saying that weapons designed to kill aren't capable of killing. Bows are fine weapons and can definitely take down a man. However, guns are simply better tools for the job.

Good luck to you buddy, I would recommend getting good with a knife as well. If you can, try sparring with your friends with training knives. Even if nobody knows what they are doing, sparring will improve your skills drastically as most people using a weapon are relying on the advantage of the weapon, not their skill with it. What I mean to say is, even if you don't get classes, you will be more prepared watching YouTube videos and sparring than the man with a kitchen knife who wants to hurt you.
A walking stick beats a knife. Nobody who wants to survive a knife attack should carry a knife. You run away if you're unprepared or you use your baseball bat/stick. Btw, a 4' ash stave of ~1 1/8 inch diameter by your bed is far superior to a baseball bat.

In a room or other confined space however, I believe knowing how to use a knife would be a good idea, especially considering your lack of firearms. I do not know if there are proper techniques for fighting in a small space with a staff, but I do know that shorter weapons tend to be better in those scenarios.
I don't plan on being stuck in a small room with an enemy but you place your hands in an overhand grip at 1/3rds along the stick and essentially lever it into their face. It's like having a hammer in each hand and a shield you can also bash with in between. But you can also punch very hard with one end and suddenly double your reach.
Obviously they can pass your guard but so too with a knife. Having a knife of your own doesn't stop you being stabbed, it just lets you also kill your attacker so you both die together. I would prefer a stick so I can put a mass with rotational force in between us which actually has stopping power and a large surface area to make contact.
Now before anyone says yeah but guns beat sticks, duh. But sticks do beat knives, even swords, and short quarterstaves are better than baseball bats.

Thankfully I own a hunting crossbow and live in an area with enough bow hunters and farmers that I doubt a permanent grid down scenario would lead to death from lack of protein. The only thing I worry about is the fact that my town is off a major highway (though it is an hour away from any major city) and that cars are very prevalent in this country. I have a few ideas on how to mitigate this of course.

I guess effectiveness rankings would match inversely with chornological rankings. Black powder would be the next best small arm after modern rifles. Keep in mind that modern bows are very weak compared to historical war bows. Unless you can get bows that are impractically powerful (physically difficult and or slow to pull) for any normal modern use, you're probably better-off with a pole arm or an even closer-range melee weapon, especially since almost all self-defense scenarios play out in close ranges.

I have a 5.5ft aluminum staff. The exact steel composition they use for airplanes. Its insanely light probably 1.5lbs. Easy to run with with great against a single assailant with a knife or blade. I would carry a small blade as well though too but use staff as primary. People would just try run up and jam their knife in you but its not as easy as they might think. A head or neck shot could be lethal or you could aim for the hand/arm with the knife.

1. For general self-defense you buy an Umarex HDR50. This is legal. You then buy a kit to modify the insides (the valve and shit). This is also legal. You then buy Razorgun Devastator steel balls. This is also legal. Then you combine all 3 and get a pistol that will kill if you shoot for the head and severely injure if you shoot for the body. This is highly illegal but nobody will know if you buy these things from separate sources. You now have a pretty useful pistol that is easy to carry with you at all times when SHTF.
2. For when you really want to fuck up a motherfucker you get a Cobra Adder repeating crossbow. I have 2 of these, one modified and one vanilla. The modified one has a larger magazine (can shoot 7 bolts), has a scope and a night vision scope that attaches to the regular scope. It also has a bayonet which I crafted myself. The bayonet should take you 1 or 2 days to craft if you have some tools like angle grinders or bench grinders. The modified Cobra Adder is insanely overpowered because with some practice you can shoot 7 motherfuckers in around 10-15 seconds. You can also do this at night and be completely silent. If you run out of arrows and some fucker charges at you, you use the bayonet to fuck him up. Also this crossbow also takes long bolts. You will lose the ability to fire multiple bolts in a short amount of time but you'll gain the ability to hunt. There's literally no crossbow right now that is as versatile as the Cobra Adder for both home defense and for hunting.
3. The best melee weapon in the world is the spear. The spear shits on swords, bats, knives, etc. It's fast, it allows you to stab from a distance and if necessary you can even throw it. You can craft a spear from old lawnmower blades.

OP, rather than focus on weapons, I'd focus on location. If you live in a city, leave. You need to be in a rural area surrounded with majority whites. Here in the america, we have baseball bats, which are great weapons, maybe you have something similar. Also, you need an edc knife, preferable a switch blade or something you can activate quickly. In your vehicle, you need an steel rod of some sort 18-24" in length. Also, get as many high powered flashlights as you can. Several for your home and one for your vehicle. Blinding intruders and wacking them with your cricket bat is going to be your goal.

CO2 is suboptimal for a few reasons. The gas tubes are bulky and fragile compared to direct diode lasers, and it produces deep infrared which is blocked by the cornea. Still can do damage but not nearly as much.

if you buy on ebay make sure you can focus the beam in a line, many cheap lasers can only be focused into a dot at a fixed distance, and you won't have range with it, because the beam is diverging in x or y no matter how you adjust the lens.

.22lr is bare minimum I'd go gun wise. Hollow point .22LR will kill a 6'4 man if you hit an artery/vital organ (they could still keep coming at you and die later, though). I wouldn't use a BB-gun or anything like that.
