No air filter

What to expect from running without an air filter? I removed my air box and put some mosquito net around the MAF housing. I got really cool induction noises and turbo blow off sounds but I'm concerned of scratching my cylinder walls with dust when the piston rings would pick it up. My intake and intercooler is coated in oil from the turbo and I think that would catch most particles. It's a diesel engine.

Save yourself some time and just chuck few handfuls of sand in it and be done with it.

You're basically sandblasting the inside of your engine over time. Race cars often don't run filters because they're getting rebuilt often enough for it to not matter, and the power draw at high levels is noticeable. It's absolutely boneheaded to do it on a street car.

      exaclty what said
if you want to keep the car for a long time, chuck in a ~~*cone*~~ or a honeycomb sponge air filter if you really wanna sound like a forest during nighttime that much

This, also not good for Cadillac converter to have dust going in, race motors are straight piped

When you see racecars with the engine cover off and no filters it's because the filter is in the scoop. Maybe drag racing doesn't run filters idk but everyone in road racing definitely has them.

Yeah road racing is a little different, especially wheel to wheel with all the dust. A lot of drag cars just have an open turbo inlet right at the front of the car

    By all means continue then

Just arrange some magnets around the inlet hose to catch any large metallic particles and jobs a goodun

Short lifespan of the engine because of sand etc dirt causing huge increase to engine wear and tear.

iv done simmiler in go carts we used a stainless chicken mesh as a filter holder and stockings as the air filter it works great .... untill a small rock finds its way thought the stockings and puts craters in your piston & in your case valves.
what those crappy K&N and other oiled fiters use medical gause if you want to do it cheap get some finer size mesh like 3x3mm and wrap some guase over it and shove it where the stock was.

Is a stock air filter that bad or what? I've reinstalled it and haven't noticed a difference. I didn't install the bottom of the air box, i ziptied the filter to the top part and that's it, I can still hear some boost sounds and it's just right.

Where did you witness such moronation?
If you actually did it: Cut open a paper air filter and see how much more material they have.
You can measure the differential pressure across the air filter with a manometer if it was an actual concern, but it's not. Performance air filters have always been a meme to sell garbage.

Why so butthurt? Duh they have more material and it's more restrictive.

            That's how filters work.

Performance air filters are not a meme. My car has 2 intakes and switching out the paper filters to K&N filters was basically mandatory as I had other mods and was going for a tune. With the shitty paper filters in place I wouldnt have gained nearly as much. On a stock car with a stock tune it would probably make little difference, but they do absolutely flow better than stock paper filters. Paper filters are designed to be cheap, long lasting, and good at filtering.

Agreed, I'll keep the bottom of my air box out still, the filter being tied to the top part where the MAF sticks in.

I just run an intake trumpet with no filter on my moped, but it's rear facing and the rebuild kit for a 2 stroke kitted moped is like $80 tops and takes like an hour to do. Have done about 1000 miles all at WOT with no filter, no issues.

Engines were made to suck a bit of dirt, just look at all those jap guys who run open trumpets on their drift AE86s or bozo crestas.
After 200,000kms it might start to make a difference, or if you follow trucks around dirt roads you might have trouble, but otherwise it will be fine.

I am thinking of making a video of it. Keep posted guys, I street tuned the ecu myself. Street tuned meaning it's not blowing coal and I can still pass inspection, not as fun but I don't want to be a mongoloid and get reported in traffic.

OP this thread is filled with filter shills trying to tear you down to their level. God did not make cars for you to cover their speed holes with napkins. It isn't natural.

unless your air filter was lost in a swamp or something then it might ge a getter ide to keep using it. they cost like nothing so just get a new one. It's not going to ruin your engin overnight unless it was going to be ruined anywawy.

Make sure to be an alpha next time you go to a local shop to change any fluids or brake pads, keep the mosquito net over the filter like an absolute chad
